SCENE 6: VILGRETH'S SHIP - CORRIDOR

STELPOR: Leave now, or you, too, will be destroyed.

DOCTOR: Destroyed!?!

STELPOR: I have planted an explosive device on this ship. It is
                operating on a time mechanism.

DOCTOR: A time bomb! You're one of those officials! I've heard
all about you! Why can't you leave Vilgreth alone?

STELPOR: It is *he* who...

DOCTOR: Haven't you got anything *better* to do with your time
                than pursue a harmless...

STELPOR: The time bomb will explode in three cycles. I must
leave now. Now I have told you, you must make your own
                choice.

DOCTOR: You cold-blooded lizard! [CALLING] Vilgreth! Vilgreth!

STELPOR: You do not understand, stranger.

DOCTOR: I understand *only* too well. [CALLING] Vilgreth!

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] The reptilian security operative scuttled
away. I was already in the lift, heading for the
                bridge.

SCENE 7: THE BRIDGE

SOUND: LIFT DOOR OPENING.

DOCTOR: Vilgreth!

VILGRETH: Ah! Doctor! Why shout? Tea is ready.

DOCTOR: No. No. Forget the tea!

VILGRETH: What wrong with my tea?

DOCTOR: Nothing! Nothing is wrong with your tea. Now, listen
to me, I tried to tell you earlier. I *did* see someone
                in the cargo hold.

VILGRETH: Nobody else. Just me!

DOCTOR: No, Vilgreth. I've *just* seen him: an Ormelian
                security operative!

VILGRETH: An Ormel... a what?

DOCTOR: One of those people you told me about. The officials
who want to *blow you up*!

VILGRETH: Officials spanners in works!

DOCTOR: Yes. Yes. A *big* spanner. He's planted a *time*
bomb! We've got to find it and deactivate it!

VILGRETH: I have a tracker device. Made it myself. We'll find
                the bomb. Come on.

SCENE 8: CORRIDORS OF VILGRETH'S SHIP.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] We set off on a frantic search. As we
continued into the workings of the ship, I could feel
                the panic within me mounting.

The ship really was beyond belief in both its size
and... sheer... *grime* everywhere. And furnaces and
boilers on *all* levels, belching out smoke and cinders.
The bomb might have been hidden under any amount of
rubbish. There wasn't a trace of anything on Vilgreth's
tracker, and I had no idea how long *three cycles* were.

DOCTOR: Vilgreth? This is hopeless.

VILGRETH: Mrrrr...

DOCTOR: Maybe we should escape in my ship while we can.

VILGRETH: No. I can not leave my darlings. They are my life.

DOCTOR: But...

VILGRETH: No! We find bomb. I find them before. This one a
little more difficult. But you go, if you want.

DOCTOR: Vilgreth, I couldn't even if I wanted to. I'm
                completely lost!

VILGRETH: Ah. You are a nice person. My only friend.

DOCTOR: Oh, come on. Wait a minute. Chalk marks!

VILGRETH: You find something?

DOCTOR: No! But, I *think* I know where we *might* find
                something. Chalk marks!

VILGRETH: This is no time for food!

DOCTOR: No! Food? Vilgreth, when I first arrived here, I made
chalk marks on the walls so I could find my way back to
                the TARDIS.

VILGRETH: But TARDIS is in furnace chamber!

DOCTOR: Yes! But I made the first chalk mark near to where I
                first saw the Ormelian operative!

VILGRETH: You mean bomb may be there? Let's go!

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] The trail was easy to follow. We just went
in the opposite direction to that indicated by my
arrows! A couple of them were a little obscured, but we
                soon found our way.

SCENE 9: VILGRETH'S SHIP - THE CARGO BAY

VILGRETH: This is place?

DOCTOR: Yes. There's the open deck hatch that I landed on.

VILGRETH: No bomb.

DOCTOR: Use the tracker, then!

SOUND: THE TRACKER BEEPS.

DOCTOR: What's this?

VILGRETH: Uhhh, view ports.

SOUND: THE VIEW PORTS ARE OPENED.

DOCTOR: Oh look, we're coming into orbit around a planet!

VILGRETH: Hrm...

DOCTOR: Hey! I...I think I recognize it.

VILGRETH: Ha! Planets only good for one thing.

SOUND: THE TRACKER BEGINS TO SOUND.

DOCTOR: Vilgreth! The tracker! It's found something!

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] I've defused a number of bombs during my
time, but the one we found under the view port was a
                dawdle.

DOCTOR: Ha! There we are! One detonator safely removed.

VILGRETH: You do good, Doctor. Now we have tea time.

DOCTOR: Yes! You know, that planet *is* familiar.

SCENE 10: VILGRETH'S SHIP - BRIDGE

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] An hour or so later, and we were relaxing
after the most enjoyable tea drinking session I've ever
had. Vilgreth had obtained an *incredible* variety of
brands from various cargo ships he'd salvaged.

SOUND: CLINKING OF TEA CUPS AND SAUCERS

DOCTOR: Ahm! My tastebuds are *exhausted*.

VILGRETH: [RELUCTANTLY] Mmmm. Hummm. How long will you stay,
                Doctor?

DOCTOR: Uhm.... Well, uh, my friend, Greg will be waking up
soon, I expect, so, uh, I...I'd better make tracks.

VILGRETH: You have another friend?

DOCTOR: Well, yes! Uh... I've had *lots* of friends over the
                years.

VILGRETH: Hmm. This is strange thing! I...I never had a friend
before... and now you go. [WITH SADNESS] Ah well.

DOCTOR: B..b..but you have your boilers!

VILGRETH: True.

DOCTOR: And I'll come back and visit you!

VILGRETH: Okay. See you again someday. Euh. I must get back to
                my darlings.

DOCTOR: Right. Of course. Uh.... That planet! It's Ormelia!
Vilgreth, you've brought me to my destination!

VILGRETH: You go there?!?

DOCTOR: Well, yes. It's a lovely place. Wh..why don't you...

VILGRETH: No. Boilers need me. I... Mmm... Goodbye.

SOUND: VILGRETH QUICKLY EXITS THROUGH THE DOOR.

DOCTOR: Oh! Wonder what all that was about.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] For a while I had intruded upon Vilgreth's
solitary life, but now I was to go. He seemed easily
resigned to his solitary ways. For a moment, I gazed at
the image of Ormelia on the bridge viewport. We were
close now. We'd soon be in orbit. Then... some
puzzling thoughts entered my head. The melted space
ship. The salvaged cargo. The primitive nature of the
propulsion system. Furnaces?!? Boilers?!? Solid fuel
                for a space ship?!?

STELPOR: Planets only good for one thing, Doctor.

DOCTOR: What? You! But I thought you'd....

STELPOR: My ship fell victim to the infernal power of this
                vessel.

DOCTOR: Infernal...

STELPOR: I have been watching you, Doctor. Your mind is
                beginning to work.

DOCTOR: Why didn't you deactivate the bomb? If you had no
                escape route?

STELPOR: I had a mission, Doctor.

DOCTOR: A suicide mission? To get a tax evader?

STELPOR: A ludicrous idea.

DOCTOR: Yes! [REALIZING] Yes.

STELPOR: Planets only good for one thing.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] That was it. The solid fuel for Vilgreth's
                ship: planets.

                Stelpor explained that a whole fleet of planet eaters;
as they were *appropriately* known; had been built
centuries ago to demolish planetoids and asteroid belts
to clear space lanes. But most of them had been
scrapped. A few, however, had been salvaged; or,
rather, *stolen* by various museums and enthusiasts.
And *this* planet eater was heading *straight* for
                Ormelia.

DOCTOR: Well, I've got the detonator core, but Vilgreth!

STELPOR: He must die with his ship.

DOCTOR: But he seems so *harmless*!

STELPOR: In himself he is. [?]....

SOUND: THE DOOR OPENS

VILGRETH: I follow you here, lizard! You will not harm my
                darlings!

DOCTOR: But, Vilgreth, don't you understand what you've been
                doing all these years?

VILGRETH: I know only my darlings and me.

STELPOR: This ship must be destroyed!

VILGRETH: No! It is my *life*!

DOCTOR: You can come with me in the TARDIS, Vilgreth! I...I
                know you didn't understand....

VILGRETH: I understand what my darlings *need* to live!

DOCTOR: But... you...

VILGRETH: I think not of others.

STELPOR: You see, Doctor? Now give me the detonator core!

VILGRETH: Noooooo!

DOCTOR: Stelpor! Don't use that gun!

SOUND: STELPOR FIRES A LASER

VILGRETH: [GROANS IN PAIN]

STELPOR: Quickly, Doctor. We must get to the cargo hold!

SCENE 11: VILGRETH'S SHIP - CARGO HOLD

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] We ran blindly to where we'd left the bomb.
Vilgreth, wounded badly, stumbled behind us. The
detonator was reset in no time - on a *very* short fuse.

DOCTOR: Come on! We must get to the TARDIS!

VILGRETH: Lizzzzarrrrd!

SOUND: VILGRETH GRABS HOLD OF STELPOR.

DOCTOR: Stelpor!

STELPOR: [Argh!] Let go of me, you brute!

DOCTOR: Stelpor!

STELPOR: You run, Doctor! I'll hold him here! [PAINED] Stop...
him from... doing damage to the bomb! Run!

VILGRETH: Rrrrr! Rooww!

DOCTOR: But I...I can't leave....

VILGRETH: Oh, Doctor!

DOCTOR: I...

VILGRETH: My friend kills me?

DOCTOR: No... I...

VILGRETH: Not fair!

DOCTOR: Vilgreth! I...I...

STELPOR: Run, Doctor!

SCENE 12: TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM

SOUND: THE TARDIS DOORS CLOSING.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] As the TARDIS doors closed, I paused for a
moment; dazed, I think. I was killing two people. And
one of them had thought of me as a friend.

SOUND: THE BOMB GOES OFF.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] The time for thinking was over.

SOUND: THE TARDIS DEMATERIALIZES.

DOCTOR: [NARRATING] But the memory haunts me to this day.

MUSIC: SAD FANFARE
