It's inhuman! MERZER: So, you *are* weak, Liev. LIEV: Liston was right. You've changed, Merzer. I thought this was purely a business operation; to create a better world. MERZER: It still is. Only the means have altered. LIEV: [IN A HUSKY WHISPER] You sold the Earth, Merzer. Sold it! TALVAR: I have heard enough. Robot! Apply the drill... to Liev's head. SFX: THE ROBOT MOVES TO COMPLY... LIEV: No! No! SFX: THE DRILL HITS HOME LIEV: NOOOOOOOOooo! DOCTOR: That *wasn't* necessary. MERZER: Weakness *must* be punished. DOCTOR: You know, Merzer, it's hard to believe you're still human... SFX: HE IS INTERRUPTED BY THE SOUND OF EXPLOSIONS COMING FROM WITHOUT TALVAR: Merzer! We are under attack from those government troops! MERZER: Our defences will repel them. DOCTOR: Could I have a glass of water, please? GREG: Make that two! NADIA: Something stronger for me. TALVAR: Silence, cretins! DOCTOR: I really think someone should attend to that robot. GREG: Looks as if it's going to boil over. SFX: THE ROBOT EXPLODES NADIA: Look out! DOCTOR: There she blows! Nadia! Greg! Run for your lives! Come on! TALVAR: Stop them! SCENE 2: DRAYTON: Thank God we've made it. Let's hope it's not too late. ROMNEY: Set countdown. GROUND CREW 1: Countdown set at fifty. Beginning pre-ignition checks. ROMNEY: Okay. Go to computer link-up. GROUND CREW 1: Computer engaged. ROMNEY: Engage ignition sequence. GROUND CREW 1: Engaging ignition sequence. Ignition sequence engaged. ROMNEY: Commence countdown now. COUNTDOWN VOICE:Fifty. Forty-nine. Forty-eight. Forty-seven. Forty-six. ROMNEY: [OVER THE COUNTDOWN] Fuel cells active? GROUND CREW 1: Check. COUNTDOWN VOICE:Forty-five. Forty-four. Forty-three. Forty-two. Forty one... SCENE 3: GREG: Where are we going to, Doctor? DOCTOR: Away, preferably. NADIA: We've shaken those robots off, Doctor. I think we can rest now. DOCTOR: What the?!? JAMES: Don't move! DOCTOR: Corporal James! How nice to see you! JAMES: All right, Doctor? Miss Nadia? NADIA: Yes, thanks! GREG: And I'm all right, too. JAMES: I've got a jeep waiting for you three. DOCTOR: Good man! We need to get into space, and soon. NADIA: What? In a jeep? DOCTOR: Come on, Nadia. SCENE 4: COUNTDOWN VOICE:Four. Three. Two. DRAYTON: Abandon the countdown! COUNTDOWN VOICE:One. We have iginition. SFX: THE SHUTTLE'S ENGINES THUNDER INTO LIFE, AND IT BLASTS OFF. ROMNEY: What was that? DRAYTON: I'm *too* *late*. COUNTDOWN VOICE:Shuttle locked on course. Flightpath confirmed. DOCTOR: It looks as though all our posts have been pipped, commandant. DRAYTON: Well, we've got the Insular Systems factory under siege. NADIA: And they've cancelled the launch of A-A-Three. DOCTOR: We have to assume that Talvar will overcome that. DRAYTON: Surely, you are over-estimating his powers! DOCTOR: I don't think so. And, after all, I should know. GREG: Why? DOCTOR: Well, I am the genius around here. NADIA: Ha! DOCTOR: Thank you, Nadia. Now then, brigadier. I need to have a look at some of those space station panels. DRAYTON: Already seen to, Doctor. I've had some taken over to the lab. If you need me, I'll be at the factory. DOCTOR: Excellent! Come on you two. NADIA: I thought you said we had to go into space. DOCTOR: I did, but I need a little confirmation of my theory. GREG: What theory? DOCTOR: A-ha! Not sure yet. SCENE 5: BSE - THE LAB DOCTOR: [LOST IN THOUGHT] Yes. Yes. I think so. NADIA: Excuse me, Doctor. I hope you don't mind me saying so, but I thought the situation was rather urgent. DOCTOR: Plug that in, would you, Greg? GREG: This one? DOCTOR: Uh, the x-ray generator plug. Yes. Sorry, Nadia, u-uh, yes, things are pretty urgent. NADIA: Well, you've been messing around with that panel for ages, and you're none the wiser. DOCTOR: Is that what you think? NADIA: Yes. DOCTOR: Greg? You say you saw a robot erupt from that wall. GREG: Yes. DOCTOR: Good. Good. NADIA: You think there's one in there, then? DOCTOR: It would be logical. GREG: You're not going to let it out? DOCTOR: Observe. Look at the x-ray display. MUSIC: STING NADIA: Robots! DOCTOR: There you are! NADIA: And that's all you've found out? DOCTOR: No. My discoveries are threefold: One, the panels double as robot containers. Two, the metal acts as a transceiver, and receiver. Three, it's encoded with the circuitry for a force field device. NADIA: Why a force field? DOCTOR: Partially, to block out the sun. The mean temperature would then be so reduced it would create ideal conditions for the supporting of an alien species that thrives in the cold. In other words, the Rigellons. MUSIC: FLOURISH SCENE 6: OPERATIONS CENTRE SFX: THE BACKGROUND HUM OF COMPUTERS AT WORK SFX2: A TELEPHONE RINGS TWICE SFX3: DRAYTON PICKS UP THE PHONE DRAYTON: Operations centre. Drayton here. DOCTOR: [FILTERED] Ah, general. DRAYTON: Ah, Doctor. DOCTOR: [FILTERED] I have to get into orbit rather quickly. DRAYTON: I'll contact shuttle control. See if they can muster a ship. DOCTOR: [FILTERED] No. Get Alpha-Alpha-Three on the pad. It must be launched - with *me* in it. SCENE 7: ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE - ON THE LAUNCH PAD SFX: ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE'S ROCKETS FIRE IN PREPARATION FOR LAUNCH TANNOY VOICE: All maintenance staff, please clear Alpha-Alpha-Three launch pad. All maintenance staff, please clear Alpha-Alpha-Three launch pad. COUNTDOWN: Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. DOCTOR: Sequence completed. Engines firing. We have launch. Align trajectory, Mister Graham. GRAHAM: Trajectory aligned, Doctor. DOCTOR: Here we go. Hold on Greg, Nadia. SCENE 8: BSE CONTROL ??: Um, excuse me, madame, we've lost all contact with A-A-Three. ROMNEY: Hm, have we? DRAYTON: What did the Doctor tell you? ROMNEY: Not a lot. He managed to get A-A-Three off the pad in record time by ignoring all the safety checks. He should *never* have been granted permission to *use* the space station. The man's insane! DRAYTON: Oh, I'm sure he is. He wouldn't be the Doctor if he wasn't. But he has got Graham, your best astronaut. ROMNEY: I take it he plans to confuse the enemy with his behaviour. ??: I'm sorry to butt in again, director, but, um, A-A-Three is being released into orbit. ROMNEY: Have it monitored. SCENE 9: INSULAR SYSTEMS - BOARD ROOM SFX: BG: THE GUN BATTLE CONTINUES WITHOUT MERZER: The Doctor and his associates are aboard A-A-Three. TALVAR: Have my spacecraft ready for immediate take-off. The Timelord must *not* interfere now. SCENE 10: ONBOARD ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE - CONTROL CABIN DOCTOR: If I'm right, this is connection thirteen. We are the last link in the chain. Events may happen at a much greater speed here. SFX: AN ALARM SOUNDS COMPUTER: A small leakage has been located in [the main] fuel store. GRAHAM: I can get down there. It'll take two people, though. GREG: I might as well go. DOCTOR: Off you trot, and don't be too long. NADIA: Now what do we do? DOCTOR: Wait for the attack to commence. NADIA: Is that it? So they do all the work while we sit here and vegetate? DOCTOR: Yes, Nadia. SFX: AN ALARM SOUNDS COMPUTER: The door mechanism in outer corridor four is registering a fault. DOCTOR: Now we can do something. NADIA: Come on, then. SCENE 11: INSULAR SYSTEMS - BOARD ROOM MERZER: Merzer here. TALVAR: [FILTERED] I'll be docking in two minutes. The operation is going according to plan. Activate force field. Now! MERZER: At once, Talvar. TALVAR: You have been most useful, Merzer. SCENE 12: ONBOARD ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE - MAIN FUEL STORE GRAHAM: I don't see any leak. GREG: Nor do I. It must have been a mistake. GRAHAM: Computers don't make mistakes. GREG: Wrong fuel store, perhaps? DOCTOR: [OVER INTER-COMM] Testing? Testing? One? Two? Three? Hello? Greg? Mister Graham? You must get back to the control cabin. It was all a ploy to lure you away. SFX: THERE IS A TEARING GREG: It's starting. GRAHAM: Come on! DOCTOR: [OVER INTER-COM] [?] the robots! Run! Get back to the control cabin! GREG: Doctor! Those robots are breaking through the walls all over the station! DOCTOR: [OVER INTER-COM] Don't fight! Don't even try it. And that's an order. They'll kill you! SCENE 13: INSULAR SYSTEMS - BOARD ROOM DRAYTON: [FROM WITHOUT] [] MERZER: You've lost, soldier. And Talvar has won. DRAYTON: We'll all have lost if you don't open this door! MERZER: Don't give me that rubbish. DRAYTON: Shoot the lock out! SFX: A SHOT IS FIRED FROM WITHOUT. SFX2: THE DOOR OPENS. DRAYTON: Right! You're under arrest! MERZER: Come and get me. DRAYTON: You step away from there, or we'll fire! MERZER: *You* step away, Colonel. *I* have a weapon, too. SFX: A SHOT IS FIRED MERZER: [SCREAMS] SFX: THREE MORE SHOTS ARE FIRED MERZER: [SCREAMS] DRAYTON: [INTO RADIO] Thrush One to Nest. Insular Systems has been taken. Corporal James has been shot dead. SCENE 14: ONBOARD ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE - CONTROL CABIN DOCTOR: Close the door! Quickly, man! GREG: Now what? DOCTOR: I honestly don't know. COMPUTER: Unauthorized docking in progress. SFX: TALVAR'S SHIP BEGINS TO DOCK WITH ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE. GREG: Doctor, think! DOCTOR: I'm thinking! I'm thinking! GRAHAM: Better act soon. They're burning through the door with a cutting tool. DOCTOR: Organize a barricade. Use that table. Greg, help him. Fill the doorway. NADIA: Well, that'll keep the robots out for a while. What about the satellite link-up? The thirteen connections? TALVAR: [THROUGH SPEAKER] If you surrender now, Doctor, your lives will be spared. DOCTOR: Good grief! It's Talvar! Up and about in his personal spaceship. SFX: THE DOCTOR BEGINS PUSHING SEVERAL BUTTONS NADIA: What are you doing? DOCTOR: I'm overloading the reactor. NADIA: Why? DOCTOR: Because, if the station self-destructs.... NADIA: The link will be broken. I see. DOCTOR: [FRANTICALLY] Hello Talvar? Hello Talvar? Come in, please? TALVAR: [THROUGH SPEAKER] Yes, Doctor? Do you surrender? DOCTOR: Call your robots off, or I blow this station to pieces. TALVAR: Your Bluffing! DOCTOR: Call off your robots, or find out. TALVAR: Very well. GREG: They've stopped, Doctor. DOCTOR: For the time being. I'm taking the reactor down from overload status. Talvar will be monitoring us now, and as soon has detects the reactor falling below critical mass, he'll have his robots on the move again. NADIA: So, we'd better find another way of breaking the satellite connection. DOCTOR: Yes. Any ideas? SCENE 15: BSE - CONTROL CENTRE ROMNEY: Hello, A-A-Three we've got you on visual. Over. GC1: Something's jamming our signals. They can't hear us. DRAYTON: How's he doing? ROMNEY: I've no idea. But look at U.S.A Station Six. DRAYTON: It's glowing! It's glowing with energy! SCENE 16: ALPHA-ALPHA-THREE - CONTROL CABIN NADIA: I've got it! DOCTOR: I hope you have. NADIA: No! Listen! Listen! You say the panels are encoded with circuitry which acts as a transceiver for the force field? DOCTOR: Yes. NADIA: Then we have to alter the encoded pattern. GREG: Or burn it out. DOCTOR: All very well, but how? GREG: The reactor! NADIA: Yes! DOCTOR: Too dangerous. I don't really want to blow it all up, you know. It's a good plan, though. The only thing that's missing is a controlable energy source which is still powerful enough to burn out the panels. GRAHAM: I've got an idea. DOCTOR: Ideas are what we want, Mister Graham. GRAHAM: The life support systems. They should carry enough low level power to do the job. DOCTOR: How do we get access to them? GRAHAM: Easy. It's the cable up there. NADIA: Doctor! The reactor is falling below critical mass! SFX: THE ROBOTS RESUME THEIR ATTACK GREG: The robots are at it again. DOCTOR: Talvar's onto us. Right. [We've nothing left to lose.?] I'll get this cable down by hand. GRAHAM: No, Doctor! The current will kill you! DOCTOR: Ha. Ha. Ironic. Killed by the life support system. Hah. NADIA: Doctor, don't! DOCTOR: I should be all right. Ah! Got it! SFX: THERE IS A SEARING SOUND DOCTOR: [SCREAMS IN PAIN] GREG: Doctor? NADIA: Are you all right, Doctor?!? DOCTOR: Here. Clumsy, ham-fisted idiot. GREG: Look out, Nadia! A robot's breaking through behind you! NADIA: [SCREAMS] ROBOT: Do not move. DOCTOR: Quick! Open the panel, Greg! I've got to attach the cable. Burn out the... eeh... the the circuits. Just *here*. GREG: No, Doctor! The robot's got Nadia! NADIA: Doctor! He's got my arm! DOCTOR: What?!? I... I.... Good grief, Nadia. Don't let it push you against the wall! TALVAR: [OVER SPEAKER] You're beaten, Doctor! Already four stations are linked. DOCTOR: [DEFEATED] And if I overload the panels here, Nadia will be electrocuted. TALVAR: Precisely. Eight stations now, Doctor! GREG: Doctor? You've cut off the life support systems. We're running out of air. TALVAR: Time is against you, Doctor. DOCTOR: I... I... don't know what to *do*! ROBOT: The girl will be freed when you release the cable. NADIA: Don't do it, Doctor! You can't let them win. DOCTOR: Well, I *can't* let you *die*, Nadia! NADIA: Think of the people on Earth! Besides, what's left for me? Homeworld's destroyed. I don't belong. DOCTOR: Shut up! I won't listen. ROBOT: Release the cable. NADIA: No, Doctor! No! DOCTOR: Nadia! Don't touch that cable! SFX: THERE IS A SPARKING SOUND AS NADIA GRABS THE CABLE NADIA: [SCREAMS IN PAIN] DOCTOR: She... She... [killed] herself. GREG: What... what happened? DOCTOR: Well, the... The circuit encoding's been burnt out. The signal is now bouncing back around the other twelve connections. There'll be a chain reaction. The stations will be destroyed. But, Nadia? GREG: I don't believe it. GRAHAM: Doctor! Greg! There's hardly any air. We must get to the escape pod. SCENE 17: SPACE - ABOVE THE EARTH SFX: THE ESCAPE POD BLASTS AWAY AS THE SPACE STATION EXPLODES WITH AN ALMOST HUMAN SCREAM. SCENE 18: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM SFX: THE TARDIS DOORS CLOSE GREG: I think we could do with a rest. DOCTOR: Yes. I have a place in mind. MUSIC: PLAINTIVE AND SPACEY SFX: THE TARDIS DEMATERIALIZES MUSIC: [FADES] (END OF SIDE TWO)synchronize
