SCENE 33: TEMPEROS - NEAR THE RUINS

MUSIC: A BRIEF REPRISE OF THE MARCH WHICH CLOSED OUT SIDE ONE.

DOCTOR: Daleks. I might have guessed.

GREG: You might have....

DOCTOR: But I didn't.

DALEK: Which of you is the Doctor? Which of you is the arch
                enemy of the Daleks?

GREG: Friends of yours, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I think silence might benefit us all.

DALEK: Speak! Answer! Speak! Which of you is the Doctor?

STRIDE: I demand to know what you've done with the research
                team.

DALEK: Silence!

STRIDE: Don't you realize this is an act of war?

DALEK: Silence, or you will be exterminated!

DOCTOR: Dare you risk it? After all, he might be the Doctor,
                for all you know.

DALEK: You are the Doctor!

DOCTOR: Really? Can you be sure?

DALEK2: We will take them all. Activate time
                dematerialization.

SFX: TIME DEMATERIALIZATION

SCENE 34: DETENTION CELL

SFX: BG: THE HUM OF DALEK MACHINERY [CONTINUING UNDER]

NADIA: Oh. Oh, dear. Doctor? Doctor? Are you all right?

DOCTOR: [DISORIENTED] Uh? What? Where? Nadia?

OKKERBY: Where are we, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I don't know. The technology sounds familiar. We must
be in some kind of Dalek ship.

NADIA: The Daleks have gone.

DOCTOR: They won't be far away.

GREG: Oooh! My head! Oooh! Excuse me. I can quite see
they're not friendly, and all that, but what exactly are
                the Daleks?

DOCTOR: Care to explain, Captain Stride?

STRIDE: Well, I don't understand. They were supposed to have
                been defeated.

DOCTOR: Very unlikely.

STRIDE: They surrendered unconditionally!

DOCTOR: Even more unlikely.

OKKERBY: It's true. A network of military satellites was put
                into orbit around Skaro.

STRIDE: There hasn't been a peep out of them ever since.

DOCTOR: Until now, Mister Stride.

STRIDE: Well...

DOCTOR: Until now.

STRIDE: There's no *way* they could have left Skaro without
                being spotted and stopped.

DOCTOR: The evidence is all around you, Mister Stride, so let's
stop disputing it, and get on with stopping them.

GREG: You know what they're doing, then?

DOCTOR: I've an idea, Greg. Let's say it's germinating.

NADIA: Something to do with that creature, the Temperon.

DOCTOR: Undoubtedly, Nadia. But first thing's first.

STRIDE: Just a minute, Doctor! I don't recall handing my
command over to you. You've got a lot to answer for.
Like, how did we get here? How are we going to get
back? And, why do the Daleks want *you*?

SCENE 35: DALEK CONTROL

[THE VOICES FROM THE CELL BECOME FILTERED, AS SOMEONE
                AGAIN LISTENS IN.]

DOCTOR: [FILTERED] You do ask a lot of questions, Mister Stride.

DALEK: Focus on the tall one.

GREG: [FILTERED] They sound fair enough to me, Doctor.

DOCTOR: [FILTERED] I don't pretend to have all the answers, but
it seems to me that the Daleks are trying to harness
time, and use it as a weapon. Now, they're already
proficient in time travel, but they need help. And it
looks as if they're forcing the Temperon to give it to
                them.

DALEK: It is obvious that this one is the Doctor. He is to be
                brought to us immediately.

DALEK UNIT 5: What of the others?

DALEK: Exterminate them.

SCENE 36: DETENTION CELL

NADIA: Doctor! You idiot!

DOCTOR: I beg your pardon?

NADIA: Look up there! A video camera!

DOCTOR: Ooh. Standard equipment for any Dalek cell.

OKKERBY: You mean, you knew?

DOCTOR: No. But the very fact that we're all here confirms that
                the Daleks want me alive.

STRIDE: But, now they know it's you, what chance have the rest
                of us got?

DOCTOR: Aye. There's the rub.

GREG: Charming. Thanks Doctor.

DOCTOR: Don't worry, Greg. I shall bargain with them. Remember,
I have the advantage. They appear to need me.

STRIDE: Well, I'm not sitting round here while you start
                hobnobbing with Daleks.

DOCTOR: Well, then, Mister Stride, what do you propose to do?

STRIDE: Okkerby and I are still armed. We could break out of
here, and make a run for it.

DOCTOR: Hasn't it occurred to you that the reason the Daleks
didn't take your guns is that they'd probably have no
effect on them anyway? [And] where are you going to
run? There'll be Daleks all over the place.

STRIDE: We'll take our chances.

GREG: What about the rest of us?

STRIDE: We're all in this together.

DOCTOR: Somebody talk to this man!

STRIDE: There is no time to argue, Doctor.

NADIA: He's got a point, Doctor. How do we know the Daleks
aren't going to kill us while you're trying to bargain
                with them?

GREG: She's right.

OKKERBY: You certainly can't trust the Daleks.

SFX: THE CELL DOOR OPENS

DALEK UNIT 5: You are the Doctor!

DOCTOR: How do you do?

DALEK UNIT 5: You will come with me. Move!

DOCTOR: Can I help you in any way?

DALEK UNIT 5: Move!

STRIDE: Okkerby, open fire!

SFX: SEVERAL LASER BLASTS FROM STRIDE AND OKKERBY'S GUNS.

DOCTOR: Don't be a fool!

DALEK UNIT 5: Under attack! Under attack! Exterminate!
                Exterminate!

SFX: THE DALEK FIRES SEVERAL BLASTS.

OKKERBY: Ow!

NADIA: Okkerby!

DALEK UNIT 5: Exterminate!

DOCTOR: Get down! Right. Get that Dalek!

DALEK UNIT 5: [FRENZIED, UNDER] Keep away! Keep away! The Daleks
cannot be destroyed! Keep away! Exterminate! The
Daleks cannot be destroyed! Exterminate! Exterminate!

DOCTOR: Drive it against the wall!

NADIA: [WITH EXERTION] It won't budge!

DOCTOR: Stride. Fire your gun at the base. You may damage the
                motive units.

SFX: STRIDE FIRES A SINGLE BLAST.

GREG: It's moving.

DALEK UNIT 5: Malfunction! Malfunction! Alert! Alert! All
units to detention cell! Alert! Alert! My motive
                units not functioning!

DOCTOR: Try and blast the clamps at the top section.

STRIDE: Why?

DOCTOR: We've got to kill the thing inside.

GREG: Lovely.

SFX: STRIDE FIRES ANOTHER BLAST.

NADIA: It's still moving!

SCENE 37: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: BG: DALEK CONTROL HUM

DALEK: Unit five is under attack!

DALEK2: Activate video.

DALEK UNIT 5: [FILTERED] ...larm! All units to detention cell!
                Alarm! Alarm!

SCENE 38: DETENTION CELL

DALEK UNIT 5: Alarm! All units to detention cell!

SFX: A LASER BLAST FOLLOWED BY A SMALL EXPLOSION

STRIDE: Got it!

DOCTOR: Pull the hatch off!

GREG: Ewwwww! Look at that.

SFX: THE DALEK CREATURE SPUTTERS ITS LAST AND EXPIRES.

DOCTOR: It's dead.

GREG: It's disgusting!

STRIDE: But it *is* dead.

NADIA: What about Okkerby?

OKKERBY: I can just about walk.

DOCTOR: Then I suggest we move as fast as we can. Since you've
committed us to this ludicrous course of action, Stride.

STRIDE: This way, Doctor, we *all* have a chance.

DOCTOR: Oh, come on.

MUSIC: BRIDGE [UP AND OUT]

SCENE 39: A CORRIDOR

OKKERBY: It...It's no good. I...I can't... I can't keep this up.

GREG: We'll have to stop for a while.

STRIDE: But the Daleks will be right behind us!

MUSIC: SWOOPING BRIDGE.

SCENE 40: DETENTION CELL

DALEK: They have destroyed this unit, and escaped!

DALEK2: They must be recaptured immediately! We need the Doctor
if the second phase of the experiment is to be
                implemented!

MUSIC: ANOTHER SWOOPING BRIDGE.

SCENE 41: A CORRIDOR

OKKERBY: Do you know? It's only just struck me....

GREG: W..what Okkerby?

OKKERBY: That this is the Temperos research base.

GREG: But the Doctor says it's a Dalek ship.

DOCTOR: That's what I assumed. Certainly *sounds* like Dalek
machinery. But, I must admit, the design is a bit
                unfamiliar.

STRIDE: Are you sure about this, Okkerby?

OKKERBY: I've been to this base a hundred times. I'm positive.

STRIDE: When we saw the research centre, it was an old ruin.

DOCTOR: Fascinating. Quite fascinating.

GREG: What is, Doctor?

DOCTOR: It's all a question of time.

OKKERBY: I think I see what you mean.

STRIDE: Daleks! Daleks! They're coming this way.

DOCTOR: Run, everybody!

NADIA: Okkerby!

SFX: TIME DISRUPTION

NADIA: It's another time disruption.

DALEK: [OFF, UNDER] Prisoners located! Prisoners
located! Halt! Halt, or you will be exterminated! Halt,
                or you will be exterminated!

NADIA: It's the Temperon. Look!

DOCTOR: Quickly everyone. Into the time disruption field.

STRIDE: This thing'll *kill* us!

DOCTOR: With luck, it will *save* you.

GREG: You don't have to tell me twice. Come along, Okkerby.

OKKERBY: Give me a hand, will you?

NADIA: But what about you, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I must stay here. Learn all I can.

DALEK: [CLOSER, UNDER] Alert! Control!

DALEK2: The Temperon must be controlled.

NADIA: I'm staying with you.

DOCTOR: No!

TEMPERON: Doctor. Doctor.

                [THE TEMPERON FADES AWAY.]

DOCTOR: Nadia! You idiot!

NADIA: You'll need help!

DALEK2: Halt! Do not move!

DALEK: This one is the Doctor!

DALEK2: Exterminate the girl!

DOCTOR: No! Kill her, and I won't work for you.

DALEK: You will accompany us to Dalek control!

SCENE 42: TIME LAB

SFX: THE CONTROL DEVICE PULSATES INSISTENTLY [UNDER]

DALEK3: Apply maximum control force. The Temperon must
not be allowed to act independently.

DALEK4: The Temperon is resisting our power! It is heading for
the time zone from which we abducted the Doctor!

DALEK3: Bring it back! Bring it back!

                [CROSSFADE TO:]

SCENE 43: REMAINS OF THE CORRIDOR

SFX: THE CONTROL DEVICE DISSOLVES INTO THE TEMPERON EFFECT

STRIDE: Now we're back where we started.

OKKERBY: It's amazing! All those legends! They're true!

TEMPERON: Friends of Doctor. Safe. Safe now.

GREG: Thank you for helping us.

TEMPERON: Safe now.

GREG: Yes. Yes we are. Can you tell us what these Daleks are
                up to?

TEMPERON: Daleks no!

GREG: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you.

TEMPERON: Make me their prisoner. Pain I cannot resist. I...

GREG: What...what are they doing?

TEMPERON: No! No! No!

                [THE TEMPERON FADES AWAY.]

OKKERBY: It's gone.

GREG: Sounds as though the Daleks got to it.

STRIDE: Well, good riddance. Now, then, let's get down to work.
Okkerby, get the transmitter working as soon as
                possible.

SCENE 44: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: BG: THE HUM OF DALEK MACHINERY.

SECTION LEADER: Temperon now confined to time cell. Strengthen time
shield. These escapes must *not* continue.

DALEK: I Obey!

SFX: A DOOR OPENING.

DOCTOR: [BRIGHTLY] Hello! Sorry I'm late.

SECTION LEADER: Silence!

DOCTOR: Well, that's no way to treat a business associate, is
                it?

SECTION LEADER: What is the girl doing here?

DOCTOR: Living. And she'll stay that way if you want me to
                co-operate.

SECTION LEADER: Very well. But if you fail to help us, she will be
                exterminated.

DOCTOR: Yes. I know.

NADIA: Well, you needn't sound so casual about it.

SCENE 45: THE RUINS

SFX: BG: WIND

GREG: Let's face it, Okkerby. That transmitter is never going
to work. If it's anything like the TARDIS, all its
                energy cells will be dead.

OKKERBY: [SIGHING] I think you're right, Greg.

STRIDE: I've checked out the immediate area. There's no sign of
                that base we were in.

OKKERBY: That's because we're in it now.

STRIDE: What *are* you talking about?

OKKERBY: Well, haven't you heard of the legends?

STRIDE: I'm only interested in fact, Okkerby.

OKKERBY: The Temperon travels through time. We're still in the
same place, but several millions of years later. We're
                at the end of time.

SCENE 46: TIME LAB

DOCTOR: Where are we now, then?

SECTION LEADER: This is your place of work.

DOCTOR: There's no place like home.

NADIA: Doctor! The TARDIS!

SECTION LEADER: We have supplied all the necessary equipment.

DOCTOR: Necessary for what?

SECTION LEADER: Observe!

SFX: A DOOR OPENS.

SFX2: TEMPERON EFFECT.

DOCTOR: The Temperon!

NADIA: Why have you got him caged up like that?!?

SECTION LEADER: The Temperon is dangerous!

DOCTOR: [QUIETLY] To you, maybe.

TEMPERON: Doctor. Doctor.

SECTION LEADER: Silence! Silence!

TEMPERON: Friend. Help. Doctor.

SECTION LEADER: Apply maximum restraint!

DALEK2: I Obey!

NADIA: No!!!

SFX: THE RESTRAINT IS APPLIED.

TEMPERON: [GROANS WITH PAIN.]

DALEK2: The Temperon is in our power!

DOCTOR: You didn't have to prove it *quite* so ruthlessly.

NADIA: Doctor, you *can't* help them. They're only going to
make you experiment on that poor thing.

SECTION LEADER: The Doctor has no choice.

DOCTOR: What do you want me to do?

SECTION LEADER: You will isolate and refine the Temperon's ability to
                travel through time at will!

DOCTOR: What's the point?

SECTION LEADER: Obey without question!

DOCTOR: But if you just t....

SECTION LEADER: Obey, or your friend will be exterminated!

NADIA: Sorry, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Not your fault. [TO DALEK LEADER] Very well.

SECTION LEADER: We will return at intervals to assess your progress.
A guard will remain with you. Obey the Daleks!
                Obey!

DALEK2: Obey! Obey!

SECTION LEADER: Obey! Obey!

DALEK2: Obey! Obey! Obey! Obey!

SFX: THE DOOR CLOSES BEHIND THEM.

NADIA: Now what do we do?

DOCTOR: Get to work, quickly. But, firstly, we need some
                answers from the Temperon.

NADIA: With that Dalek standing on guard?

DOCTOR: That's a good point. And we haven't a hope of
                over-powering it.

NADIA: We could just get in the TARDIS and go.

DOCTOR: Of course!

NADIA: Doctor! You're not serious! We can't leave that poor
Temperon in the hands of the Daleks!

DOCTOR: Come on!

NADIA: But, Doctor, I thought you wanted to stop the Daleks!

                [CROSS FADE TO]

SCENE 47: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX: THE TARDIS DOORS OPENING.

NADIA: .... [UNINTELLIGIBLE] I mean what sort of person are
                you?

DOCTOR: Nad...Nadia! Do you think the Daleks would let me have
the TARDIS if they thought I was just going to take off
                with it?

NADIA: Well....

DOCTOR: No. I don't think so either.

NADIA: Of course! The time cells are exhausted!

DOCTOR: Don't remind me.

NADIA: Then why are we here?

DOCTOR: We can talk openly for one thing. And, for another, we
*may* be able to get the Temperon to appear in the time
                rotor again.

SCENE 48: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: DALEK MACHINERY HUM.

DALEK: Unit four reports that the Doctor and the humanoid
                have entered the TARDIS!

SECTION LEADER: It will be necessary for him to use machinery from The
TARDIS, but he will be unable to escape. He will *have*
to utilize the power source we have provided.

SCENE 49: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

DOCTOR: [MUMBLING TO HIMSELF] Power cell chronologue. Input
                monitor...

NADIA: Is this the cable you wanted?

DOCTOR: Uhhhh.... Yes, Nadia. Thank you. Could you attach it
                to the blue bracket, please?

NADIA: I don't see the point of this, Doctor. When we landed
on Temperos, the energy cells were completely decayed.

DOCTOR: Well, they still are. But the environmental units in
the TARDIS aren't affected by time. They're perpetually
recharging themselves. Very clever, isn't it?

NADIA: Doctor! That's marvellous!

DOCTOR: Well, it is only low-level power, but I'm gambling on
there being enough residual energy left in the time
cells. Oh, yes. We're in luck.

NADIA: I can't understand why it's so important to get the
Temperon into the time rotor again. The last time, it
                nearly killed you.

DOCTOR: That was a complete accident, I believe. You see, the
Temperon finds it difficult to comprehend how a creature
can live along one time stream.

NADIA: What if it ages you again?

DOCTOR: I don't think it will. I can't remember for sure, but I
think I attempted to explain human beings to it last
                time we communed.

NADIA: What if it forgets?

DOCTOR: It hasn't forgotten yet, has it? You see, the Temperon
is exerting tremendous power to prevent us all from
suffering the effects of time dislocation.

NADIA: Of course! When we were at the ruins of the research
base, we were on a dead planet. We shouldn't have been
                able to survive.

DOCTOR: That's right! The Temperon has given us something like
a... dimensional cocoon. It protects us in much the
same way as the TARDIS when we travel in it through
                time.

NADIA: So, why do you want to contact the Temperon again?

DOCTOR: Quite simply, it's the only being outside the Daleks who
knows what the Daleks are up to. With that information,
we might *at least* stand a chance of defeating them.

NADIA: Well, we'd better get on with it, then.

DOCTOR: My thoughts exactly. Now, what we've got to do is
generate a powerful enough time field to attract the
Temperon's attention. He should be able to do the rest.
Now, I've re-routed the power circuits, and if I can
just make sure that all the connections are safe... yes
they are. I'll do the concentrating, and you press the
                button.

NADIA: It's a deal.

DOCTOR: Power on!

SFX: THE POWER COMES ON

NADIA: Power on.

DOCTOR: Increase.

NADIA: Increasing. Is it getting through?

DOCTOR: Shhh!

NADIA: But we're running out of power already!

DOCTOR: [IN A TRANCE-LIKE CHANT] All of space and time.

NADIA: Doctor?

SFX: TEMPERON DEMATERIALIZATION EFFECT.

NADIA: Doctor? He's gone again.

SCENE 50: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: THE HUM OF DALEK MACHINERY.

SECTION LEADER: Report!

DALEK: The other humans are still at liberty in the second
                time zone.

SECTION LEADER: Send a squad to capture them. They will be useful as
                additional hostages.

SCENE 51: THE RUINS

STRIDE: Oh, there's *got* to be a way of sending for help.

OKKERBY: There'd be no point, even if we could. We're in a time
zone far beyond the lifetime of the human race, or, at
least, *any* of its space empires.

STRIDE: Don't be ridiculous.

GREG: Stride, it's obvious that this Temperon thing can travel
around through time. That's why the Daleks have
                captured it.

STRIDE: But, why has it brought us here?

GREG: Maybe it had no choice. I don't know! I'm not the
                expert. You explain, Okkerby.

OKKERBY: I'm afraid I don't know either. I can only suggest that
                the Temperon wanted some help.

STRIDE: That's exactly what *we* need.

SFX: A TIME DISTORTION

GREG: What's that!?!

STRIDE: Daleks! Take cover!

SQUAD LEADER: Halt! Halt! Do not move, or you will be exterminated!

GREG: What do you want with us?

SQUAD LEADER: You will come with us!

OKKERBY: What have you done with the Doctor?

SQUAD LEADER: The Doctor is working for us. Soon he will make us
                invincible!

STRIDE: How?

SQUAD LEADER: No further questions! Move into the transportation
                field!

STRIDE: All right.

SQUAD LEADER: Move!

STRIDE: [QUIETLY TO GREG AND OKKERBY] You two. When I give the
                word, run for the ship.

SQUAD LEADER: Silence! You will not speak!

OKKERBY: [QUIETLY] Stride, I don't regard this as a suicide
                mission.

STRIDE: NOW! RUN!

SQUAD LEADER: Halt!

SFX: THE DALEK FIRES ITS WEAPON

SQUAD LEADER: Halt! Do not move!

STRIDE: Okkerby! Open the ship's door!

SFX: THE DOOR IS OPENED

GREG: Quick, Greg! Inside! Hurry up, Stride!

STRIDE: Get inside. I'll close the door.

SFX: HE FIRES HIS LASER.

SFX2: THERE IS AN EXPLOSION.

DALEK: [VOICE SLOWING] Malfunction! Malfunction!

SQUAD LEADER: The humans have taken refuge in the spaceship.

SCENE 52: EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

OKKERBY: Are you all right, Stride?

STRIDE: Never felt better! And I got one of those pepper pot
                things.

GREG: You only damaged it. Your weapons seem pretty
                ineffectual against the Daleks.

STRIDE: Oh, these maybe, but we've got an armoury aboard this
ship with grenades *and* a laser cannon! We'll blast
                them to *pieces*!

GREG: If they don't do the same to us first.

STRIDE: Oh, keep your *pacifist* rubbish to yourself!

OKKERBY: Don't want to damage the morale of the troops, do we?

STRIDE: *Shut* up, Okkerby!

SCENE 53: OUTSIDE EXCELSIS

SQUAD LEADER: Dalek time squad calling Dalek control.

SECTION LEADER: [FILTERED] Dalek control receiving.

SQUAD LEADER: Humans are hiding in Earth vessel Excelsis. We
have them surrounded. Advise course of action.

SECTION LEADER: [FILTERED] Present ultimatum. If they refuse to
                cooperate, exterminate the spaceship.

SQUAD LEADER: Understood.

SCENE 54: EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

GREG: Okkerby? I've looked around the ship. We're surrounded
                by Daleks.

OKKERBY: Hardly surprising.

GREG: Stride's still in the armoury.

OKKERBY: What a *stupid* man he is.

SFX: THERE IS AN EXPLOSION FROM WITHOUT.

GREG: It's started.

SQUAD LEADER: Attention! Attention! That was a warning! If
necessary, we will destroy the ship. We will give you
                *one* minute to surrender!

SCENE 55: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM.

SFX: BG: TARDIS HUM

NADIA: Oh, thank goodness you're back, Doctor!

DOCTOR: Oh! Oh, yes. So I am.

NADIA: Are you all right?

DOCTOR: Mmm yes. No aging effect this time. Good. Good. Oh
                dear.

NADIA: What's the matter? Did you find out what the Daleks
                want?

DOCTOR: I've just remembered. It's worse than I thought.

SCENE 56: EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

OKKERBY: Stride, we haven't any choice, but to surrender.

STRIDE: I've got the laser cannon set up in the forward
                view-port.

GREG: They're hardly going to rush into your range, though,
                are they?

SQUAD LEADER: [RESOUNDING, AS IF THROUGH A LOUD SPEAKER] Attention!
Attention! You have thirty seconds to go before we
                exterminate this ship! Surrender! Surrender!

STRIDE: But if I destroy just some of them, their firepower will
                be reduced!

OKKERBY: That won't stop them!

STRIDE: It'll give us time!

GREG: Time for what? Time to worry about when they'll try and
                kill us next!

STRIDE: We are *not* surrendering!

GREG: All right. All right. But we can't stay here, can we?
                We're a sitting target.

SQUAD LEADER: [RESOUNDING] Attention! Attention! You have ten
seconds left before we open fire! Surrender now!

GREG: Can you fire that cannon by remote control?

STRIDE: No. Why?

GREG: Well, I thought if we could be ready to get out as soon
as your cannon fires, the Daleks might not see us in the
                confusion.

OKKERBY: We haven't got time to rig a remote control.

STRIDE: No, but I could use the emergency escape hatch by the
                forward port!

OKKERBY: They won't be distracted for *that* long, you know.

SQUAD LEADER: [RESOUNDING] Your time is up! Surrender now!

GREG: Quick! Open the porthole.

STRIDE: You can *not* surrender!

GREG: Go and get to the laser cannon, and we'll see you in the
                mountains.

STRIDE: Here. Take these grenades.

GREG: Thanks.

STRIDE: Oh, and Okkerby.... Good luck.

SCENE 57: EXCELSIS - PORTHOLE

GREG: Hello? Daleks? We surrender. Don't fire.

DALEK: Come out into the open.

GREG: We'll be right down.

OKKERBY: Greg. Look. They're gathering round the exit.

GREG: Damn! Is there another way out?

SFX: A BLAST FROM THE LASER CANNON, FOLLOWED BY AN EXPLOSION.

GREG: That was Stride's laser cannon.

OKKERBY: He's hit three Daleks.

GREG: Quick. Show me the way to the forward escape hatch.
We'll have to get out the same way as Stride.

SCENE 58: OUTSIDE EXCELSIS

SQUAD LEADER: The humans have tricked us! Burn down the door!

DALEK: [Observe!] The humans are escaping!

SQUAD LEADER: Pursue! Pursue!

SCENE 59: OUTSIDE EXCELSIS - WITH GREG AND OKKERBY

GREG: [WINDED] We've got to get to those rocks.

SFX: A DALEK GUN FIRES

OKKERBY: But Stride's over there.

STRIDE: [CALLING] Come on! They're right behind you!

DALEK: Pursue! Pursue! [IMPROVISED RANTS CONTINUING UNDER.]

SFX: DALEK GUN FIRES

STRIDE: [CALLING] Use the grenades!

SFX: AN EXPLOSION

[A DALEK DIES, GOING CRAZY, AND SPUTTERING WORDS AND
                SOUNDS ALL THE WHILE.]

SQUAD LEADER: The humans have escaped into the mountains. We must
follow. Have trans-solar disks brought here
                immediately.

DALEK: I Obey!

SCENE 60: TEMPEROS - THE MOUNTAINS

STRIDE: Whoa! We've made it.

GREG: Only just.

OKKERBY: [Don't? be?] a bunch of heroes.

STRIDE: There's no time for that we've got to get moving.

SCENE 61: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: BG: DALEK MACHINERY HUM.

SECTION LEADER: Report.

DALEK: The humans in the second time zone have evaded us
again. The time squad are requesting trans-solar
                disks to continue pursuit.

SECTION LEADER: Give them the trans-solar disks, and exterminate the
squad leader. failure is not permitted.

DALEK: I obey.

SECTION LEADER: The Doctor has still not left the TARDIS. We must
make sure that he is not plotting against us.

SCENE 62: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM.

NADIA:          Well, the information you got from the Temperon;
whatever it was; doesn't seem to have made you any more
                optimistic, does it?

DOCTOR: No. Yeah. I must confess that I hadn't bargained on
the Daleks being quite so ambitious. It's very easy to
fall into the trap of seeing them as tin-brained
lunatics. The fact is that they're one of the most
technologically advanced races in the universe. For
sheer ingenuity, they out-rank their human opponents
                every time.

NADIA: But Stride said that the Daleks had lost some
inter-galactic war, and that their planet was
                surrounded.

DOCTOR: Hm. It wouldn't surprise me if the whole defeat was
                engineered by the Daleks themselves.

NADIA: But if they're so clever, why do they need you?

DOCTOR: They don't. Not really. It's the Temperon they need.
He's just proving a little hard for them to control.

NADIA: You mean, you're here to lull it into a false sense of
                security?

DOCTOR: Hm. And the worst part is, there's really nothing else
I can do, but obey them.

NADIA: And let them win?!

DOCTOR: If I sacrifice myself by disobeying, then they'll
                certainly win.

NADIA: You still haven't told me what the Daleks want from the
                Temperon.

DOCTOR: Oh no! Look at the scanner. We've got company. The
Daleks want to see how much we've done. We'd better go
out and look busy. Come on!

SFX: THE TARDIS DOORS OPENING.

SCENE 63: TIME LAB

SECTION LEADER: Doctor.

DOCTOR: Ah! Yes! Hoo! Busy goings-on in there, you know. Time
mechanics is hot work. Tea up, is it?

SECTION LEADER: Report your progress.

DOCTOR: Progress? Uh... never trusted it myself. People make
the most *dreadful* mistakes in the name of progress.

SECTION LEADER: Report!

DOCTOR: Report. Yes. Well, I - that's me here... the... the
Doctor - and my *wonderful* assistant Nadia - that's
                her. She's a God-send, you know -

SECTION LEADER: Report!

DOCTOR: That's what I'm doing! Reporting! That was the... uh
preliminary report, you see? We're here, and uh,
                you're there... are you?

SECTION LEADER: What progress have you made?

DOCTOR: Good. Good. You're there. We're here. You're there.
Good. Fine. That's it then, isn't it, really. Well
                see you later.

SECTION LEADER: Exterminate the girl!

DOCTOR: Ahhhh report! I see what you mean! You want to know
                about the time factor?

SECTION LEADER: Have you refined it?

DOCTOR: My dear fellow, it was only ever crude in your hands.
Time travel is the most refined of past-times.

SECTION LEADER: You will answer!

NADIA: Stop messing about, Doctor!

DOCTOR: I..I..I will I..I..I will answer [UNDER HIS BREATH] oh
great tin-brained lunatic. [TO THE DALEK] Well then,
since you need me here to soothe the Temperon into the
right frame of mind for inhuman torture....

SECTION LEADER: Experimentation!

DOCTOR: With a live subject? It's the same thing. I've had to
use a bit of compassion. I don't expect you know what
that is, but I can tell you that it takes some time.
So, I've been in communication with the Temperon.

SECTION LEADER: Communication is forbidden!

DOCTOR: Really? Never mind. I won't do it again. And the
Temperon said to me that he'll give you all the
information you want if you turn off the time cage.

SECTION LEADER: Unacceptable! You will extract the genetic
information we require - by force, if necessary -
while the Temperon remains in the cage!

DOCTOR: Don't you understand that you can't interfere with your
own natures. Goodness knows you're enough of a genetic
hotchpotch as it is without conditioning
                more folly into yourselves.

DALEK LEADER Knowledge of our plan is forbidden!

DOCTOR: What you are doing is forbidden by morality! Yes. The
Temperon moves throughout time with as much ease as you
or I travel through air, but it's a peaceful, contented
creature. Nobody has the right - least of all you - to
ravage time with your paranoid ambitions!

SECTION LEADER: It is clear that you have made little progress. When we
return, if you have not acquired the information we need
to become time creatures, we will exterminate your
                friend!

SFX: THE DOOR QUICKLY OPENS AND CLOSES AS THE DALEKS LEAVE.

DOCTOR: Petty threats to the last! Huh! Petty, but effective.

NADIA: So, that's what the Daleks are up to. They want to be
able to travel through time, like the Temperon.

DOCTOR: Yes. And, for the moment, I've got to help them.

NADIA: Well, can't we free the Temperon somehow?

DOCTOR: I don't know. There must be a way.

NADIA: Well, can't we use this generator that the Daleks...

DOCTOR: No! The Daleks'll be monitoring the output. No. We've
got to turn the Daleks' own strength against themselves.

NADIA: Well, they're clever and they're ruthless. So we've
                just got to be cleverer.

DOCTOR: And use their cruelty! Precisely.

SCENE 64: TEMPEROS - THE MOUNTAINS

OKKERBY: This is madness! We've been travelling for miles, but
there's nowhere for us to go!

GREG: She's right, Stride. We're safe, all right, but in the
                middle of nowhere.

STRIDE: But we are safe.

OKKERBY: [IRONICALLY] Whoopee.

SFX: A PULSATING SWOOPING SOUND BECOMES APPARENT.

GREG: Listen! What's that?!?

OKKERBY: Look! There's a light in the sky!

STRIDE: Could be a rescue ship.

SFX: THE PULSATING SWOOP GROWS IN VOLUME AS A TRANS-SOLAR
                DISK PASSES NEAR THE GROUP.

DALEK: Trans-solar disk patrol reporting. Area nine sweep
                completed. No sightings to report.

GREG: A flying Dalek. That's all we need.

SCENE 65: TIME LAB

NADIA: Is it in pain?

DOCTOR: I don't know. A little, maybe.

NADIA: Doesn't look very happy to me.

DOCTOR: No. He doesn't, does he?

NADIA: How do you know it's a he?

DOCTOR: I don't. Nadia? Do you remember when the Daleks first
tried to stop the Temperon communicating with me?

NADIA: Yes. They said something about maximum restraint. It
                was horrible.

DOCTOR: I know. It was a sort of beam, wasn't it?

NADIA: Yes. Came from.... over there somewhere.

DOCTOR: I was just thinking. It must have a power source,
                mustn't it?

NADIA: But how would we turn it on?

DOCTOR: Well, we wouldn't have to, would we? The Daleks would
do that for us. Look. I'll have to get on with this
work to keep the Daleks happy, but could you scout
                around for that restraint device?

NADIA: What about the guard?

DOCTOR: Well, he's only here to stop us getting out... I hope.
                Right. Off you go.

SCENE 66: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: DALEK MACHINERY HUM.

SECTION LEADER: Excellent. The Doctor is now working for us.

DALEK: What is the girl doing?

SECTION LEADER: She is of no consequence. She will be Exterminated
along with the Doctor when his work is completed.

SCENE 67: TIME LAB.

NADIA: [WHISPERING] Psst! Doctor! I've found the power
                source for that restraint device!

DOCTOR: [SHOWY] Good! Good! Excellent! [WHISPERING] I think
I've recorded enough genetic gobbledegook here for the
moment. Now, what I've got to do is re-route the power
of the restraint beam, so that when the Daleks use it,
it will destroy the time cage.

NADIA: [WHISPERING] But they're bound to be watching you!

[THE TWO CONTINUE TO CONVERSE IN WHISPERS.]

DOCTOR: I know. That's the problem. My little show of defiance
has probably made them very wary of me.

NADIA: They didn't seem to mind me wandering about.

DOCTOR: No! They didn't, did they? Ha! The Daleks must be the
                most awful male chauvinists!

NADIA: That doesn't surprise me, in the least!

DOCTOR: Can you re-route the, uh, restraint device?

NADIA: Well, I can try, can't I?

DOCTOR: Go to it, Nadia.

SCENE 68: TEMPEROS - THE MOUNTAINS

OKKERBY: We might as well give ourselves up.

STRIDE: They'll *kill* us!

GREG: They could have destroyed your ship without giving us an
                ultimatum, you know.

OKKERBY: It's more likely they were going to use us as hostages
to force the Doctor's hand in some way.

STRIDE: In that case, I'd prefer to die.

OKKERBY: Stride, you really are tiresome, aren't you?

SFX: A TRANS-SOLAR DISK HOVERS NEARER

GREG: Shut up, you two, and look out! The Dalek's over there.

STRIDE: We'll have to move on. They can't cover the whole
                planet.

GREG: I don't see why not. I vote we sit tight here, and
                wait.

OKKERBY: For what?

GREG: I don't know, but I prefer boredom to death any day.

SCENE 69: DALEK CONTROL

SFX: DALEK MACHINE HUM

SECTION LEADER: Report!

DALEK: Search for humans continuing in second time zone.
                No sightings reported.

SECTION LEADER: Order two more to engage in search. We will shortly
need new hostages if the Doctor proves difficult.
Assemble experimental squad. Ready them for genetic
engineering. We must now proceed to assess the Doctor's
                progress.

SCENE 70: TIME LAB

DOCTOR: [WHISPERING] How's it going, Nadia?

NADIA: [WHISPERING] I think I've done it, Doctor.

DOCTOR: [WHISPERING] Good. [SHOWY] Then everything is ready!
Do you hear me, guard? You can tell your leader that
                we've done what he wanted.

DALEK: The section leader is already on the way to observe
                your work.

DOCTOR: [TROUBLED] What? Oh no.

NADIA: [WHISPERING] What's the matter, Doctor?

DOCTOR: [WHISPERING] Well, I won't have enough time to commune
with the Temperon again! And, it's a little
simple-minded unless you commune with it. I'll just
                have to try shouting.

SFX: THE DOOR TO THE LAB OPENS.

NADIA: Doctor! They're here!

DOCTOR: Oh. Oh! Hello!

SECTION LEADER: Report your progress.

DOCTOR: Temperon! Temperon! Can you hear me?

SECTION LEADER: Communication is forbidden.

TEMPERON: Doctor. Doctor. Friend. Friend.

DOCTOR: Yes. Yes. I'm your friend. Now, listen....

SECTION LEADER: Silence! Silence!!

DOCTOR: Now, remember our last chat, do you?

TEMPERON: Remember. Remember.

DOCTOR: Yes! Oh, this is hopeless.

SECTION LEADER: You will not communicate with the Temperon!

DOCTOR: Pardon? Didn't hear you. Sorry.

SECTION LEADER: Exterminate the girl!

DOCTOR: What?!? No! no! Don't do that!

NADIA: Doctor!?!

TEMPERON: Doctor. Doctor. [CONTINUING UNDER THE FOLLOWING
                EXCHANGE] Doctor. Doctor. Doctor...

DOCTOR: I'm sorry! I won't communicate with the Temperon.
                Don't kill the girl.

SECTION LEADER: Release her. [TO TEMPERON] Silence!

TEMPERON: ...is friend. Doctor.

SECTION LEADER: Silence! Maximum restraint!

DOCTOR: Here we go. Quick, Nadia, into the TARDIS!

DALEK: I Obey!

SFX: THE RESTRAINT IS ACTIVATED.

SFX2: THE TIME CAGE DISINTEGRATES.

SECTION LEADER: Where is the Doctor? Locate the Doctor!

DALEK: The time cage has disintegrated! The Temperon has
escaped! Emergency! Locate the Doctor! Emergency!

SECTION LEADER: All units, locate the Doctor!

SCENE 71: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX: THE TARDIS DOORS CLOSING.

DOCTOR: Huh! We'll be safe in here!

NADIA: They don't even know where we are.

DOCTOR: Look at the scanner! The Temperon's free!

NADIA: But we're stuck here.

SFX: TEMPERON MATERIALIZATION EFFECT.

NADIA: Doctor! The Temperon's back in the time rotor again!

SFX: THE TARDIS BEGINS TO DEMATERIALIZE.

DOCTOR: Ah! The Temperon is powering the TARDIS! That's
                wonderful!

                [CROSS-FADE TO:]

SCENE 72: TIME LAB

SFX: THE CONTROLS FOR THE TIME CAGE EXPLODE AND SPARK SEVERAL
                TIMES.

SECTION LEADER: The Doctor is escaping in the TARDIS! Emergency!
                Alert!

DALEK: Our time cage has been destroyed. The Doctor cannot
                be recaptured!

SECTION LEADER: It does not matter! Observe! He has completed the
genetic pattern for us. We can proceed with the
experiment. Order the search squads in the second
time zone to exterminate the humans on sight!

SCENE 73: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX: BG: TARDIS IN-FLIGHT HUM.

NADIA: Where are we going, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I don't know. None of the controls are working.
[CALLING] Uh, where are we going Temperon?

TEMPERON: Doctor. Doctor. Friend.

DOCTOR: Oh, dear. He does find verbal communicating rather
                difficult.

NADIA: Try telepathy.

DOCTOR: No. That doesn't work. You see, the Temperon actually
weaves time into communication patterns. It's a
wonderful experience to talk with him properly. Takes it
                out of you, though.

NADIA: Well, ask the Temperon to take us to Greg and the
                others.

DOCTOR: Well, he seems a bit busy working the TARDIS to commune
with me. Uummm, we haven't really got any residual
energy left to attract his attention.

NADIA: Try shouting.

DOCTOR: Uh, [SHOUTING] Temperon? Hello! [TO HIMSELF] Oh, this
                is ridiculous!

NADIA: Go on, you attracted his attention before.

DOCTOR: Oh, very well. [SHOUTING] Hello!

SFX: THE TARDIS BEGINS TO MATERIALIZE.

DOCTOR: Oh! Well, I wonder where we are?

SCENE 74: TEMPEROS - THE MOUNTAINS

OKKERBY: I'm bored stiff!

SFX: THE TARDIS CAN JUST BE HEARD MATERIALIZING.

GREG: Sh!

STRIDE: What's that?

OKKERBY: Not another Dalek machine!

GREG: I don't believe it. It's the TARDIS! Doctor! Doctor?

DOCTOR: Greg! Greg? Where are you?

STRIDE: Come on you two, this is our way out.

SFX: A DALEK GUN FIRES

DALEK: [DISTANT] The fugitives located!

STRIDE: Look out, Greg!

DALEK: Shoot and exterminate!

DALEKS: [SEVERAL, UNDER] Exterminate!

DOCTOR: Nadia! Look! It's Greg!

OKKERBY: We'll have to make a run for it.

GREG: Come on!

SFX: STRIDE FIRES SEVERAL BLASTS FROM HIS GUN

STRIDE: Take that, you metal morons!

GREG: Stride, get down!

STRIDE: Run for it! Both of you! I'll cover you!

OKKERBY: Come on, Greg! Stride's indestructible! Or, so he
                thinks.

SCENE 75: TEMPEROS - THE MOUNTAINS, OUTSIDE THE TARDIS.

DOCTOR: Greg! You made it! Are you all right?

GREG: I'm fine.

OKKERBY: Can we just get inside this contraption.

SFX: A DALEK GUN FIRES.

DOCTOR: What about Stride?

STRIDE: [SCREAMS IN AGONY AS THE DALEK'S BLAST FINDS ITS
                TARGET.]

GREG: [COLDLY] He's been killed.

DALEK: [OFF] Locate the Doctor!

DOCTOR: Come on, everyone inside.

SCENE 76: THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX: TARDIS DOORS CLOSING

DOCTOR: Temperon we're....

TEMPERON: Doctor. Friend. Safe now. Safe.

SFX: THE TARDIS BEGINS TO DEMATERIALIZE

DOCTOR: Yes. Yes we are. Thank you.

OKKERBY: This is amazing, Doctor. Amazing! Did you make all
                this?

DOCTOR: Good grief, no!

GREG: How did you get it working again, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Well, I didn't. It's the Temperon who's powering us.

GREG: So, we're still no better off?

DOCTOR: Apparently not.

OKKERBY: What about the Daleks? Is it true that you were working
                for them?

DOCTOR: Well... Yes and no.... I think.

NADIA: What do you mean, you think?!?

DOCTOR: I'm not... I'm not sure.

NADIA: You said that you gave the Daleks a lot of genetic
                gobbledegook.

DOCTOR: Yes, I thought I did, but come to think of it, it did
come to mind rather easily. Oh dear.

OKKERBY: What have you done, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Well, the Daleks wanted me to help them become creatures
like the Temperon: creatures who could travel at will
through time. Manipulate it. Weave it.

GREG: Can the Temperon do all that?!?

DOCTOR: Certainly. Acting under Dalek instructions, it dragged
the Temperos research base to the end of time.

OKKERBY: So, that's why all the chronometers went wrong.

DOCTOR: I imagine your ship was dragged into the time
                distortion, yes.

NADIA: But what have you done wrong, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Well, before I put that genetic pattern on record for
the Daleks, I'd been communing with the Temperon. Now,
my intention was to mislead the Daleks, but in the heat
of the moment, I fear that all my sub-conscious
knowledge of the Temperon just... well, came out.

NADIA: You mean, you gave the Daleks the right pattern?!?

DOCTOR: I rather think I did, Nadia.

NADIA: Doctor, you....

DOCTOR: Idiot? Yes.

SFX: TEMPERON DEMATERIALIZATION EFFECT.

NADIA: Doctor?

GREG: He's gone!

NADIA: And so is the Temperon!

GREG: The TARDIS has stopped.

OKKERBY: Where are we?

GREG: Let's look, shall we?

SFX: THE SCANNER IS OPENED.

NADIA: Oh, no! We're out in space again. This is how it all
                started.

SFX: TEMPERON MATERIALIZATION EFFECT.

OKKERBY: What's that?

GREG: I don't know. It's coming from over....

NADIA: Daleks! Appearing out of nowhere! They must have used
                the Doctor's pattern!

OKKERBY: We've got to get out of here!

GREG: We can't. I mean you can't just walk out of the TARDIS
into the middle of outer-space, can you?

NADIA: And those Daleks are blocking the way out of the control
                room.

OKKERBY: That's that, then. Goodbye Greg, Nadia. Nice to have
                met you.

GREG: Ever the optimist, Okkerby.

NADIA: Shut up, you two!

OKKERBY: Come on! Get it over with!

DALEK: [TRIES TO SPEAK, BUT IS UNABLE TO]

SFX: THE DOCTOR RE-MATERIALIZES.

GREG: Doctor! Look out! Daleks!

DOCTOR: [LAUGHS] Don't worry. It's perfectly all right. They
                can't hurt you.

NADIA: Why not?

DOCTOR: Because, bless them, they're too old.

OKKERBY: Too old?

DOCTOR: Yes. You know, it's true that I accidentally told the
Daleks everything I knew about the Temperon. It's just
                that there's something that I didn't know.

NADIA: Of course! The time dislocation effect that the
Temperon protected all of us from!

DOCTOR: That's right. These Daleks can travel through time at
will, but they age accordingly, poor things. Knowing
that their first target would be us, the Temperon lured
them into the distant future. Now they're so old, they
can't even muster the will to travel back in time to
save themselves. Rather sad, really, isn't it? They'll
be dead soon. Not even Daleks live forever.

GREG: They're... they're vanishing!

DOCTOR: Hm. Old Daleks never die. They just fade away. Time
                disintegration.

OKKERBY: What about the other Daleks?

DOCTOR: I'm afraid they can still travel through time with
limited mechanical means. With the help of the
Temperon, we've just foiled one of their many evil
plans. But, they'll be back. They never give up.
                Still, the good news is...

GREG: What?

NADIA: Come on, Doctor, tell us.

DOCTOR: The Temperon has restored the TARDIS time cells. How
                about that?

NADIA: Then we can have that holiday!

DOCTOR: That's right. I must say, Nadia. You've cheered up
                considerably.

NADIA: Well, you must be the Doctor.

DOCTOR: And what makes you say that?

NADIA: Because a professional saboteur wouldn't make so many
                mistakes.

DOCTOR: Thank you.

OKKERBY: [CLEARS HER THROAT] What about me?

DOCTOR: Oh, Okkerby. How could we forget you? How could we?
Well, I haven't, actually. The Temperon has put us on a
locked course to one of your Earth relay stations.
We'll drop you off there, and you can make your own
                report to the authorities.

OKKERBY: Report? I've never made a report in my life! That was
more in Stride's line of work.

DOCTOR: Hmmm. Right. Let's be on our way. Greg! Nadia! I
have a feeling that life begins at seven hundred and
fifty...ummm...uh... seven hundred and [SIGHS]. At any
rate, I feel that my life has just begun.... all over
                again.

GREG: That sounds ominous.
