SCENE 1:        SPACE - ONE LIGHT-YEAR FROM THE TEMPERON SYSTEM

SFX:            THE SPACE BUOY BEEPS ITS LONELY SIGNAL [UNDER]

BUOY:           In case anybody's listening, this is the space buoy
                Temperon One, telling you that you're one light-year from
                the Temperon system, and the planet Temperos.

                This buoy was put here by the kind souls of the Temperos
                Research Base, who are more than a little concerned that
                their monthly supply ship doesn't get lost on its way
                in.

                See ya soon fellahs!

                [THE AUTOMATED MESSAGE WINDS BACK ROUND TO THE
                BEGINNING, AND STARTS TO REPEAT.  AS IT DOES SO, WE
                SHIFT OUR PERSPECTIVE UNTIL WE ARE HEARING IT FILTERED
                THROUGH A SPEAKER.]

SCENE 2:        EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

STRIDE:         Why they can't install a simple bleeping device, I shall
                never know.

HARLAN:         It's just a bit of fun, Sir.

STRIDE:         Well, they're not out here for fun!  They're supposed to
                be researching into time travel; not concocting jokey
                messages to send out into space.

                [THE BUOY FADES OUT ENTIRELY]

HARLAN:         [FRUSTRATED, ALMOST AUTOMATIC] Yes, Sir.
 
STRIDE:         They're wasting vast amounts of government money.

HARLAN:         Yes, Sir.  Shall I get back to the boiler room, Sir?

STRIDE:         Yes, Mister Harlan.  You may resume your duties on the
                *engineering deck*.

HARLAN:         Thank you, Sir.

SFX:            ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENING

STRIDE:         Oh, and make sure you're there when we need to come out
                of hyperspace.
 
HARLAN:         [OFF] Yes, Sir.

SFX:            ELECTRONIC DOOR CLOSING

STRIDE:         [UNDER HIS BREATH] There's no discipline in the service
                these days.  I've only got a crew of two, and I can't
                get either of them stay on the bridge for more than five
                minutes at a time.

                [DISSOLVE INTO]

SFX:            WE HEAR THE SHIP FLYING THROUGH HYPERSPACE, FIRING AN
                ENGINE OR TWO.

SCENE 3:        EXCELSIS - BRIDGE - A SHORT TIME LATER.

STRIDE:         Science officer!

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE X2 [UNDER]

STRIDE:         Where are you?

OKKERBY:        [FILTERED] Okkerby here, Captain.  I'm in my quarters.
                Why?

STRIDE:         Why?!  You're supposed to be up here once in a while.
                You know, monitoring galactic phenomena.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

OKKERBY:        [FILTERED] Look.  I know this is your first time on the
                Delta-Temperos run, but I've done it a *hundred* times
                before.  It's mind-bogglingly routine in every respect.
                There *are* no phenomena.

STRIDE:         What about that distortion on the chronometers?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

OKKERBY:        [FILTERED] This is an *old* ship, Sir.  It's well
                overdue for servicing.

SCENE 4:        EXCELSIS - OKKERBY'S CABIN

OKKERBY:        [UNFILTERED.  WE'RE NOW HEARING THE CONVERSATION FROM
                OKKERBY'S PERSPECTIVE] The clocks are *always* the first
                to go wrong.  Don't *worry* yourself, Captain.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] I find your attitude *highly* unsatisfactory.
                I shall enter it in the report.

OKKERBY:        That is, of course, your privilege.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] I shall expect you on the bridge when we come
                out of hyperspace.

OKKERBY:        Yes, Sir. Okkerby out.  [TO HERSELF] Now where was I?

SFX:            SHE HITS A BUTTON WHICH RESPONDS WITH A
                `BLEE-BLEE-BLEEP' NOISE.

MUSIC:          THE ANDANTE FROM MOZART'S "EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK"
                BEGINS TO PLAY.  AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT STARTS
                TO WARP, SLOW DOWN, AND ECHO AS....

SFX:            TIME SLOWS WITH A CLACKING AND A CLICKING AND...

                [TIME SUDDENLY RETURNS TO NORMAL AS...]
 
SFX2:           FOUR SHARP KNOCKS [FROM WITHOUT] ON OKKERBY'S CABIN
                DOOR.

SFX3:           OKKERBY SHUTS OFF THE MUSIC WITH ANOTHER SHORT BLEEP.

SFX4:           ANOTHER FOUR KNOCKS ON THE CABIN DOOR.

OKKERBY:        Hello?

HARLAN:         [THROUGH DOOR] It's me, Harlan.

OKKERBY:        What do you want?

HARLAN:         [THROUGH DOOR] Can I come in?

OKKERBY:        Yes.  Of course.

SFX:            ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENING.

HARLAN:         Hi.  

SFX:            A CLINK OF GLASSES

HARLAN:         Fancy a drink?

OKKERBY:        Ffff...What?

HARLAN:         Well, I'm bored stiff.  There's nothing to do in the
                boiler room, and Stride's been driving me up the wall.
                This journey seems to be taking forever.

OKKERBY:        Yes.  Stride was on at me just now.  Sit down.

HARLAN:         Oh, thanks.  [OFFERING A GLASS] Here.

OKKERBY:        Thanks.

SFX:            HARLAN POURS HER DRINK.

HARLAN:         I hear you're a regular on this trip.

OKKERBY:        Yes....For my sins.  Actually, I'm *quite* interested in
                time travel, but it's a *long* time since I gave up the
                idea of pushing forward the boundaries of human
                knowledge.  Now I'm sort of stuck here.

HARLAN:         So, you've never seen the Temperon, then?

OKKERBY:        No!  Those legends may have been the inspiration to the
                time research team on Temperos, but they've got *very*
                little to do with reality.

HARLAN:         [DISAPPOINTED] Oh?

OKKERBY:        You sound disappointed.

HARLAN:         Well, I fancy getting a glimpse of it to see if my
                grandfather was right.
 
OKKERBY:        He was one of the space mariners then?

HARLAN:         Yeah, as a kid I was spellbound by the stories he used
                to tell me: a great beast, drifting through space and
                time.

OKKERBY:        Awe-inspiring, isn't it? That's what the government
                thought too.  So they used it to rekindle their
                much-needed popularity.  [MOCKING] Humanity takes on the
                greatest legend of space.  Solves the mysteries of time.
                Hum.

HARLAN:         Very cynical, aren't we?

OKKERBY:        I'm an eccentric failure.  I'm entitled to be cynical.

HARLAN:         A..and yet you stick with this ship?

OKKERBY:        Well, somewhere inside me, I'm still hoping that I'll be
                in on some time travel breakthrough.

HARLAN:         Well, here's to the future, then.  [HE TAKES A SIP FROM
                HIS GLASS]

OKKERBY:        How far off Temperos are we, by the way?

HARLAN:         Mmm... almost a light-year.

OKKERBY:        Funny.  But this trip seems to be taking a lifetime.

HARLAN:         And I thought it was just me.

OKKERBY:        I must be getting old.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Come in Okkerby!  Stride here.

OKKERBY:        Excuse me.  It's the Fuhrer.

HARLAN:         Don't tell him I'm here.

OKKERBY:        Hello, Captain.  What can I do for you?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] You can get up here right away.

OKKERBY:        What's the matter?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] All the chronometers have gone dead.

HARLAN:         What time do they show?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Mister Harlan?  What are you doing there?  I
                told you to....

HARLAN:         Never mind that, Sir.  But n... just tell me what time!

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Uhhh... relative oh-one-five-six.

OKKERBY:        What are you on about, Harlan?

HARLAN:         Look at your clock Okkerby.  It's stopped...

OKKERBY:        ... at relative oh-one-five-six.  Must be a coincidence,
                mustn't it?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] What's going on?  Hello?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

HARLAN:         This could be your breakthrough, Okkerby.

OKKERBY:        I... don't know.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Both of you.  Get up here immediately.
                There's something out there.  I..in space.

OKKERBY:        What do you think?

SFX:            ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENING.

HARLAN:         I think we'd better go and see.

SCENE 5:        THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX:            BG: TARDIS HUM

NADIA:          This is ridiculous!  The Doctor's been gone for *hours*
                now.

GREG:           So much for our holiday on Cassiopeia.

NADIA:          He shouldn't just go around answering so-called distress
                calls from any old time traveller.

GREG:           Now, Nadia, be fair.  He did say he was sure it was a
                genuine call, and that he'd no choice but to... well...
                commune with it...this other traveller.  All the same, I
                must admit I didn't expect him to just vanish like that.

NADIA:          No.  Neither did I.  Admit it, Greg.  Something's gone
                drastically wrong.

SFX:            A STRANGE, WET, ORGANIC SCRAPING SOUND SUDDENLY EMERGES.
                [CONTINUING UNDER]

GREG:           What's that?

NADIA:          Eugh! In the time rotor!

GREG:           I..It looks like a... swollen... brain! Well, it's..
                it's horrible.

DOCTOR:         [STARTING OUT SO SLOWLY THAT THE WORDS COME ACROSS ONLY
                AS SOUNDS, BUT QUICKLY COMING UP TO SPEED AND REPEATING
                THE FOLLOWING PHRASE, IN AN OBVIOUS LOOP, THREE TIMES]
                Don't you want to find out what's going on?

NADIA:          That's the Doctor's voice!  Doctor!  Can you hear us?

SFX:            A HIGH-PITCHED WHINE, ENDING IN A FOCUSED, ECHOIC,
                SWOOPING EFFECT.

GREG:           Are you all right, Doctor?

NADIA:          It's gone!

GREG:           Who *is* that?

NADIA:          It's an old man.

DOCTOR:         [BREATHES HEAVILY, CONTINUING UNDER]

NADIA:          Quick!  Get him a chair.

GREG:           Right. Yes.

NADIA:          Uh... are you all right?  [PAUSE] Where is the Doctor?
                He went to help you, didn't he?

GREG:           Here.  Let's sit him down.

NADIA:          There.  How are you feeling?  [TO GREG]  Look at the
                state of his clothes.

GREG:           It's as if he's been wearing them for a hundred years.

NADIA:          Greg, his clothes!

GREG:           Yes.  All right.

NADIA:          They're all torn up, but... but they're the Doctor's.

GREG:           What!?

NADIA:          And hi... and his...and his face.  Thi...this is the
                Doctor.  Much older!  But it *is* the Doctor!

GREG:           That *thing* must have done this to him!

NADIA:          Poor, Doctor.

GREG:           He doesn't look too healthy, does he?

NADIA:          Doctor?  Doctor?

GREG:           Is he all right?

NADIA:          He's dead.

SCENE 6:        SPACE - NEAR TEMPEROS.

SFX:            WITH A SWIRL, AND A RIPPING OF ENGINES, THE SHIP ATTAINS
                SUB-LIGHT SPEED. [EXTERNAL]

SCENE 7:        EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

SFX:            THE SHIP'S COMPUTER SWISHES AND BEEPS IN ACCORDANCE WITH
                THE CHANGE IN SPEED.

STRIDE:         Sub-light speed attained.  Okkerby.  Any sign of that
                thing on the space scope?

OKKERBY:        No, Sir.  Are you sure you weren't imagining it?

STRIDE:         Of course I'm sure.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] It must have been the Temperon.

STRIDE:         Nobody asked your opinion, Mister Harlan.  By the way,
                that was a very shaky deceleration you put us through.
                There was far too much time distortion.
 
SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Nothing to do with me.

STRIDE:         Oh, no.  Of course not.  Okkerby?  Any more on the
                chronometer situation?

OKKERBY:        No, captain.  None of the ship's clocks are working, and
                they've all stopped at the same time.
 
STRIDE:         I see.  Right.  Let's get underway.  Mister Harlan, take
                us in on the space buoy's signal!  Oh, and spare us the
                pain of having to listen to its message.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED]  Yes, Sir.

STRIDE:         The sooner we get to Temperos, the better.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED, URGENT] Hello!?  Er, Captain Stride?

STRIDE:         What is it, Harlan?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] There's no signal.

STRIDE:         What do you mean?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] The buoy must have gone dead.

SFX:            OKKERBY OPERATES HER COMPUTER CONSOLE WITH A FLURRY OF
                BLEEPS.

OKKERBY:        I've got it on visual.  There it is.  I..I'm probing it.
                Completely dead, Sir.

STRIDE:         Impossible.  But those batteries are supposed to last
                for fifty thousand years.  Mister Harlan?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Yes, Sir?

STRIDE:         Get a space suit ready.  I'm going to have a look at
                that buoy when we get close enough.
 
SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Is that a good idea, Sir?

STRIDE:         [STUNNED] I... beg your pardon?

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Well, this is obviously the work of a
                Temperon, Sir.

STRIDE:         Oh, rubbish!  Just get that suit ready, and park us by
                the buoy.

SCENE 8:        THE TARDIS - NADIA'S ROOM.

SFX:            BG: TARDIS HUM

GREG:           So, this is your room, is it?

NADIA:          Yes.

GREG:           Not much in it.

NADIA:          Well, I didn't bring much with me, did I?

GREG:           Something about you has changed, Nadia.

NADIA:          Has it?

GREG:           What's this you've been reading?

SFX:            HE PICKS UP THE BOOK.

GREG:           [READING TITLE] Universal Linguistics:  The Study of
                Speech Patterns.

NADIA:          I can read what I like, can't I?

GREG:           Yes, Nadia.  I suppose you can. [A LONG, TROUBLED PAUSE]
                What... what are we going to do?  With the Doctor dead,
                we're going to be stuck out here in the middle of
                nowhere.  Forever.

NADIA:          Is he still in the control room?

GREG:           Yes....well, I didn't...didn't like to disturb him.

NADIA:          We'll have to move him, Greg.  Come on.

SCENE 9:        EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

SFX:            MANEUVERING ROCKETS FIRING

SFX2:           COMMUNICATOR BEEPS

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] We're parked on space buoy Temperon One,
                Captain.  [STIFLING A LAUGH] The suit's waiting at the
                dry cleaners.

STRIDE:         [THROUGH CLENCHED TEETH] At the *what*?

OKKERBY:        He means the airlock.

STRIDE:         I *know* what he means.  In future, Mister Harlan, you
                will use strict procedure language at *all* times.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEPS

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Affirmative, Captain.

STRIDE:         God, that man's an *idiot*.  Monitor my progress here,
                Okkerby.  I'm going outside.

SFX:            ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING.

OKKERBY:        [UNDER HER BREATH] That man takes himself *far* too
                seriously.

SCENE 10:       THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM.

SFX:            BG: TARDIS HUM

GREG:           What *are* we going to do, Nadia?

NADIA:          Let's just tackle one problem at a time, Greg.  [PAUSE]
                Well, what are you waiting for?

GREG:           [PAUSE] Umm, after you.

NADIA:          Really, Greg.

GREG:           [SURPRISED] He's gone!

NADIA:          Oh, no.

GREG:           That *thing's* taken him!

DOCTOR:         Never jump to conclusions!

GREG:           Who are you?

NADIA:          What have you done with the Doctor?

DOCTOR:         Well, now, that's... that's a difficult one.  What have
                *I* done with the Doctor?

NADIA:          Don't touch those controls!

DOCTOR:         Why not?  You don't want to be stuck out here forever,
                do you?

GREG:           You're the other time traveller, aren't you?  You're the
                one who's killed the Doctor!

SFX:            A SUDDEN REVERBERATING ALARM

NADIA:          What was that?!

DOCTOR:         I'm afraid I know *exactly* what it is.  We're toppling
                over the edge of a time abyss.  I never thought of it as
                possible, but all the instruments confirm it.

SFX:            THE TIME ABYSS BEGINS TO PULL THEM IN.

                [THEIR VOICES START TO BECOME SLOWER AS THEY FALL INTO
                THE ABYSS.]

DOCTOR:         Hold on to something!

GREG:           How do you know so much about the TARDIS?

DOCTOR:         Because, Greg, I'm the Doctor.

NADIA:          But, the Doctor's dead!

DOCTOR:         Well, for a dead man, I'm feeling remarkably well.

NADIA:          This is all your fault.

DOCTOR:         Hold on.  We're going through a time distortion.

GREG:           You can't be the Doctor!

DOCTOR:         Just shut up, and brace yourselves!

SFX:            AS THE EFFECTS OF THE TIME DISTORTION INCREASE, THE
                DOCTOR'S LAST FEW SENTENCES BECOME MUDDLED TOGETHER INTO
                A SERIES OF LOOPED AND REPEATED PHRASES.

SFX:            [FADE]

                [DISSOLVE TO]

SCENE 11:       EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

STRIDE:         [FILTERED, BREATHING HEAVILY]

SFX:            A SERIES OF BLEEPS [UNDER]

OKKERBY:        Captain Stride?  Okkerby here.  Everything all right?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Yes.  I'm climbing aboard the signal beacon
                now.  Everything looks good.  All power cables in
                place.  Nope.  Nothing wrong here.

HARLAN:         There's *still* no signal.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Mister Harlan, what are you doing on the
                bridge? You should *be* with your engines.

HARLAN:         How did *you* know where I was, Sir?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Oh, it's easy.  I just assume you disobey my
                orders.

OKKERBY:        This is Okkerby, Captain.  Try examining the battery.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] I was just about to, thank you.

OKKERBY:        Only trying to help.

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] I know *my* job.

HARLAN:         Have you got it?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Seems to be corroded.  Hang on.  [Perhaps
                it....] I don't *believe* it.
  
OKKERBY:        Is the battery damaged?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] No. Not exactly, it's... old.

HARLAN:         Old?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] Completely dead.

HARLAN:         I thought you said they had a fifty-thousand-year
                lifespan?

STRIDE:         [FILTERED] I *did*.  And they *do*.  Look, Okkerby, I'm
                coming back to the ship.

SCENE 12:       THE TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM

SFX:            THE TARDIS MANAGES A WOBBLY MATERIALIZATION.

                [THE DISTORTION IS STILL AFFECTING THEIR VOICES, CAUSING
                THEM TO SOUND MUCH SLOWER THAN NORMAL.]

DOCTOR:         I think we're levelling out.

GREG:           I feel sick!

                [TIME FINALLY RETURNS TO NORMAL]

SFX:            BG: TARDIS HUM.

DOCTOR:         And we're drifting slowly now.

NADIA:          Down this... time abyss thing?

DOCTOR:         Yes, Nadia.

NADIA:          How do you know my name?

DOCTOR:         Well, Nadia that's uh...

NADIA:          Don't *touch* me!

DOCTOR:         I wasn't! .... Something about you has changed, hasn't
                it?

NADIA:          What do you mean?

DOCTOR:         The way you talk.

GREG:           I thought that!

NADIA:          Don't listen to him, Greg!  He's trying to trick you.

GREG:           But he knew *my* name, too.

DOCTOR:         I realize that this must be very difficult for you.

NADIA:          I don't have to listen to you.  Greg was right!  *You*
                killed the Doctor!  *You* set a trap for him!  And, when
                he fell for it; thinking you needed help; you aged him
                to death!
 
DOCTOR:         Whoever needed help is still out there.  That's who
                brought us here; wherever *here* is.

NADIA:          You're not the same person.

DOCTOR:         I *am*.

NADIA:          People just don't change!

GREG:           You have, Nadia.  What about that linguistics book you
                were reading?

DOCTOR:         What's that, Greg?

NADIA:          Look!  I just wanted to forget everything about
                Homeworld.  I'm not there any more.  It doesn't exist
                any more.  But every time I heard my own voice, it
                reminded me again, so I decided I *had* to change it.
                Change the way I speak.
 
DOCTOR:         There you are.  People *do* change.

GREG:           Not quite the same thing, though, is it?

DOCTOR:         No.  I didn't change by choice.  You see our friend
                out there is a time traveller by *genetic design*.

GREG:           What?  Tha... that blobby thing?

DOCTOR:         Yes.  It didn't understand my inability to traverse time
                without the protection of the TARDIS.  Lucky I'm a Time
                Lord.

NADIA:          Why?

DOCTOR:         Well, because it means I can regenerate the cells of my
                body.  It'll save *time* and *energy* if you accept
                that.

NADIA:          Yes, you'd like that, wouldn't you?

DOCTOR:         [TETCHY] Yes, Nadia, I *would*.  Now... [CALMER] don't
                misunderstand me.  I *admire* an inquiring mind.  It's
                very healthy to....

NADIA:          Don't give me that!

DOCTOR:         But, young lady....

NADIA:          Don't talk to me like that!

DOCTOR:         I'm sorry.  I'm sorry.  But you *must* understand that
                there's a lot *at stake* here.
 
NADIA:          What *are* you talking about?

DOCTOR:         Well, I can't remember as much as I'd like to.  That's
                what's so infuriating.  But this time creature is
                mixed up in something catastrophic.  I believe we must
                attempt to help it for *its* sake, and *ours*.
 
NADIA:          Oh! Very noble!

DOCTOR:         [TETCHY AGAIN] You'll have to adjust, Nadia!

NADIA:          Why, to suit you?

DOCTOR:         Greg?  What do you think?

GREG:           I'll go along with your story, [TRYING OUT THE WORD]
                Doctor?  You don't look like a blob to me, and since the
                Doctor's body's gone, I mean... *your* body's gone...
                well, there's... there's no other explanation, is there?

NADIA:          Oh, yes!  Where have you put the body?!

OKKERBY:        [FADING UP] I say again:  This is supply ship Excelsis
                calling Temperos research base.  Please acknowledge.
 
STRIDE:         Steady as she goes, Mister Harlan.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Yes, Sir.

OKKERBY:        Captain, I'm getting no response at all.

STRIDE:         Well, it looks like we've stumbled across an emergency
                situation.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR BEEP

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Temperos orbit achieved, Sir.

STRIDE:         Thank you, Mister Harlan.  Okkerby.  Transmit emergency
                code to Earth Base.  Request *immediate* assistance.
 
OKKERBY:        Yes, Sir.  Code transmitted, Captain.  No response
                signal from relay station five!
  
STRIDE:         Damn!  The signal won't reach Earth.

OKKERBY:        Whatever got at the Temperos space buoy has deactivated
                the relay station.
 
STRIDE:         Well, let's not jump to conclusions, Okkerby.  Try the
                base again.

                the base *should* be.

OKKERBY:        The sun!  Look at the Temperos sun!  It's going dark!

SFX:            BG: TARDIS HUM.

DOCTOR:         This TARDIS was supposed to have been good for another
                three thousand millennia yet.
 
GREG:           What's going to happen to us?

DOCTOR:         I'll have to materialize before we're marooned in the
                vortex.  Uhhh, excuse me.  I need to concentrate.

GREG:           Nadia!

NADIA:          What?

GREG:           Listen.  I understand your skepticism, but... can't you
                just accept him for the time being?  I mean, look at
                him.  He's genuinely worried.
 
NADIA:          He does seem a bit upset, doesn't he?

GREG:           I think we're in a lot of trouble whether we like it, or
                *not*.

NADIA:          Yeah, I know.  And he's the only one who can help us.
                All right.  I'll play along with him.

DOCTOR:         Greg?  Nadia?  Hold on!
 
SFX:            TARDIS BEGINS TO PERFORM A BRIEF MATERIALIZATION

DOCTOR:         We've landed!

GREG:           Where?

                though, according to the instruments.  Coming Nadia?
 
NADIA:          Anywhere's better than *here*.

DOCTOR:         I see.  All right.  Let's go...

SFX:            HE OPENS THE TARDIS DOORS.

SFX:            BG: A DESOLATE, WINDY WASTELAND [CONTINUING UNDER].

GREG:           It's a bit dark, isn't it?

DOCTOR:         Dying sun.  Look.

NADIA:          This place is *dead*.

DOCTOR:         I'm inclined to agree.

NADIA:          Yes.  And we're stuck here, of all the places. [PAUSE]
                Oh.  Look over there!

GREG:           It's an ancient ruin!

NADIA:          [AFTER A LENGTHY PAUSE] Well, *where's* he gone now?

GREG:           The Doctor?  Oh, he's over there.  Go on. Go and get
                him.

NADIA:          No.

GREG:           Nadia?!?

                [WE CUT TO THE DOCTOR'S PERSPECTIVE]

DOCTOR:         [MUMBLING TO HIMSELF] Total lack of soil nutrients.
                Nothing's grown here for a *long* time.  Why did it
                bring us here?

NADIA:          [CLEARS HER THROAT]

DOCTOR:         Perhaps we just drifted off course.

NADIA:          [OFF] Uh, Doctor.

DOCTOR:         [PLEASED] Nadia!  Hello.  What is it?

NADIA:          Um, come and have a look over here.

DOCTOR:         Oh, found something interesting, have you?  All right.

GREG:           Over here, Doctor!   Look!  It's some sort of ruin,
                isn't it?

DOCTOR:         Ohhhh, I see.  There *was* life here once, then.

NADIA:          A long time ago.

DOCTOR:         Hmmm.  Well, we've no choice, but to investigate.  Best
                feet forward!

GREG:           Hiking was never my favourite past-time.

NADIA:          You could always stay here.

GREG:           *Not* likely.

SCENE 18:       TEMPEROS - OUTSIDE THE RUINS

SFX:            FEET CLIMBING ON A HILL, COMPOSED OF LOOSE ROCK

DOCTOR:         [GRUNTING WITH EXERTION] Lend a hand, Greg?  [WITH
                EXERTION] Uhhh! [WITH EXHAUSTION] Whew!  Quite a climb,
                wasn't it?

NADIA:          Well, here we are.  And was it worth it?

DOCTOR:         This is millions of years old.

GREG:           I wonder who built it.

DOCTOR:         Nadia, what do you think?

NADIA:          Definitely a technological civilization.  Look.
                Power-operated doors.

DOCTOR:         Ahhh, I don't expect they'll work now.

GREG:           Then it's just as well so many of the walls have fallen
                through.

NADIA:          Not a lot to see though, is there?

DOCTOR:         [FADING] You really ought to concentrate more on your
                enthusiasm...

DOCTOR:         Well, there's no sign of conflicts, explosions, war;
                that sort of thing.  And yet, there's something...
                something *violent* in the way everything happened here.

GREG:           It all looks very old to me.

DOCTOR:         Yes, but.... Oh, maybe it's just a feeling, but if you
                look at these walls, the machinery.  Somehow it seems
                that it aged all at once.  But these aren't the marks of
                slow erosion.  They're... oh I don't know.

GREG:           Oh, interesting theory, Doctor.  Keep us posted.

DOCTOR:         [LAUGHS] Sorry, Greg.  Effects of the regeneration, I
                suppose.  I must say I'm feeling *distinctly* fatigued.

GREG:           Mmmmm.  How's Nadia?

DOCTOR:         Hum... still a little wary of me.

GREG:           You mustn't mind her.

DOCTOR:         It's understandable, of course.  She's been through a
                lot of harrowing experiences.  And now, just when she
                thought she had some security, I pop off, then come back
                from the dead with a different face, expecting her to
                welcome me with open arms.
    
GREG:           She'll come round.

DOCTOR:         I hope so.

GREG:           We'd better go and find her.

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] The power units are virtually exhausted, Sir.
                I don't understand it!

SFX:            OKKERBY'S COMPUTER GURGLES A SIGNAL [UNDER].
 
OKKERBY:        I have a visual fix on some kind of building.
                Geo-vector eight-oblique-three-five.
 
STRIDE:         That's where the base should be.

OKKERBY:        Can't be!  Reads as an ancient ruin.  Totally collapsed.

STRIDE:         Mister Harlan, begin landing procedures.

SFX:            COMMUNICATOR NOISE

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Yes, Sir.

OKKERBY:        Picking up life readings.  Humanoids.

STRIDE:         Maybe that's the people behind all this.  When we step
                out onto the planet, we will be armed and ready.

NADIA:          Is this what you're looking for?

DOCTOR:         Ummm, Ahhh.  The power source.  Uhhh, is it operational?

NADIA:          Hardly likely, is it?

NADIA:          The cells are disintegrated.

DOCTOR:         Hmmm, and in much the same way as the TARDIS cells:
                rapid aging.

GREG:           That happened to you, too, Doctor.

DOCTOR:         That's what I was thinking.

NADIA:          The other time traveller.

SFX:            [FADE UP] THE SUPPLY SHIP EXCELSIS, SOUNDING UNHEALTHY
                [GROUND PERSPECTIVE].

GREG:           Look up there!

DOCTOR:         A space vessel.  In trouble by the looks of it.

SCENE 21:       EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] I'm working on emergency power only, Captain.
                Main drive has packed up completely.
  
STRIDE:         Try to hold her steady, Mister Harlan.  We need
                something to cushion our landing.  Okkerby!  What is our
                position?
 
OKKERBY:        We're ten geo-vectors off target.

STRIDE:         Why isn't this *blasted* helm responding?!

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] It's power-assisted, Sir.  You'll have to
                switch to manual!

OKKERBY:        Inside the planet's atmosphere?!  You're *mad*!

STRIDE:         Position, Okkerby?

OKKERBY:        Geo-vector fifteen-oblique-C-nine.  Just put us *down*,
                Sir!

HARLAN:         [FILTERED] Three minutes of emergency power left.  Then
                it's... [plain sailing].

                carry arms.

DOCTOR:         I imagine they were suffering from the same time
                dislocation which affected the TARDIS.
 
GREG:           You mean, that ship is a time machine?

TEMPERON:       Doctor [REPEATED UNDER MOST OF THE DOCTOR'S SPEECH]

DOCTOR:         [VERY DISTRACTED] No... Uhhh... bu..but the...
                time...disturbance effect has... probably...uh...
                prob...probably encompassed the... the... the...
                encompassed a...a large spacial... spacial... ummm...
                spacial fiel... Oh dear.

GREG:           Doctor?

NADIA:          What's the matter with him?  He looks like death.

GREG:           Doctor?  Is it the regeneration?

DOCTOR:         ...time factor...uh-uh-uh...

SCENE 23:       TEMPEROS - SURFACE

SFX:            THE MAIN DOOR OF THE SUPPLY SHIP EXCELSIS OPENS

OKKERBY:        This isn't the Temperos I remember.

STRIDE:         In that case, Okkerby, we'll send Harlan to scout on
                ahead.  See if you can climb up those ruins, Harlan.

HARLAN:         Do I have to?

STRIDE:         Move.

HARLAN:         Sir.

OKKERBY:        What happened here?

STRIDE:         It certainly doesn't look like the memory bank images.

OKKERBY:        It's... darker.  Older.  Look.  The ground's just
                powdery and dry.

SCENE 24:       TEMPEROS - THE RUINS

GREG:           Doctor?  Doctor?  Come on.  Wake up!  The people from
                that ship.  They're coming this way!
 
NADIA:          It's no use.  He's out cold.  Anyway, those people might
                be friendly.
 
GREG:           Yes.  But we can't be sure, can we?

NADIA:          Where are they now?  Oh look!  Only one of them's coming
                this way.

GREG:           The others have found the TARDIS.

SCENE 25:       TEMPEROS - NEAR THE TARDIS.

STRIDE:         What is it, Okkerby?

SFX:            SHE GIVES THE TARDIS A FEW TAPS.

OKKERBY:        Don't ask me.  I've never seen it before.  Could be a
                container, I suppose.

STRIDE:         Containing what?

OKKERBY:        I don't know.  I'm only guessing!

STRIDE:         Well, does it pose any kind of danger?

OKKERBY:        How should I....

STRIDE:         In your opinion, Science Officer.  It is your job to
                make recommendations.

OKKERBY:        [SIGHS] Well, it doesn't look as though it's going to
                blow up, does it?

STRIDE:         Non-hostile.  Right.  Let's see how Mister Harlan is
                staggering on.
  
SCENE 26:       TEMPEROS - THE RUINS

GREG:           I don't like the look of that one.

NADIA:          Which one?

GREG:           The closest one.

NADIA:          He'll see us any minute now.

GREG:           He's got a gun of some sort, and we're probably in
                range.

NADIA:          Right.  Let's not hang around.  Carry the Doctor over
                there.  Behind that bit of wall.  We'll see if they're
                friendly before we show ourselves.
  
GREG:           [GRUNTING WITH EXERTION] Come on, Doctor.

DOCTOR:         [MUTTERS INCOHERENTLY]

HARLAN:         Anybody there?

GREG:           He's coming this way!

NADIA:          Shhhh!

GREG:           [WHISPERING] How's the Doctor?

NADIA:          Shh!

STRIDE:         [OFF] What is it, Harlan?

HARLAN:         Uh, nothing.

DOCTOR:         I...muh... warn... the Temperon.

NADIA:          Doctor....

GREG:           Shhhh!

DOCTOR:         I muh.... I... must.

STRIDE:         Anything to report?

HARLAN:         Ummm, quite a climb, isn't it?

STRIDE:         Anything useful?

HARLAN:         Nope.  Nothing much here, really, is there?

OKKERBY:        I don't believe it!

STRIDE:         Would you care to let us in on your amazement?

OKKERBY:        This is definitely the Temperos Research Base.

HARLAN:         What do you mean?  It's just a pile of old rocks.

OKKERBY:        It's what's left of the base.

STRIDE:         Well, can you tell what happened?

OKKERBY:        No.  Well, I mean, I..I know it sounds stupid, but it's
                like we've turned up a few million years too late.
  
DOCTOR:         [DELIRIOUS, OFF] Temperon!  The Temperon... Ah...

STRIDE:         What the Hell was that?

DOCTOR:         [FRANTIC, DELIRIOUS] Greg!  It's... It's the time
                factor!  The time factor!  Greg!  You must listen to me.
                Greg!

GREG:           [WHISPERING FURIOUSLY] Doctor!  Be quiet!  [TO NADIA] He
                seems to be having some sort of fit!

DOCTOR:         It's the time factor.  It's a question of time.  We must
                tell the Temperon.  It's the time factor.  It's a

STRIDE:         [OFF] Who's there?  Come out where we can see you.

SFX:            TIME DISTORTION EFFECT

GREG:           [WHISPERING, DISTORTED] What's that?!?  What's
                happening?!?

SFX:            A SWIRLING OF BACKWARD MUSIC

DOCTOR:         Time distortion.  The whole of space and time
                collapsing.

STRIDE:         Okkerby!  What on *Earth* is happening?

OKKERBY:        I...I don't know.  It... I...I don't believe it!  Look!
                It's the base!  But how it was!  How I remember it!

GREG:           [WHISPERING] Everything's changing.  The walls are
                rebuilding themselves.

SFX:            THE TARDIS CAN BE HEARD DEMATERIALIZING WITHIN THE
                DISTORTION EFFECT.

NADIA:          Time is reversing.

DOCTOR:         The TARDIS!  Somebody's taking the TARDIS!

NADIA:          Doctor!  Come back!

SFX:            AS THE TARDIS FADES AWAY, SO DOES THE DISTORTION EFFECT.

GREG:           [WHISPERING] They *see* you!

STRIDE:         Halt!  Don't move.

DOCTOR:         My TARDIS!  The TARDIS!

OKKERBY:        It's over.  The base.  It's gone again.

DOCTOR:         [DESPONDENT] The TARDIS has gone.

STRIDE:         Harlan, cover him.  If he moves, shoot.

HARLAN:         But he isn't armed!

STRIDE:         Just *shut* up and do as I say!

HARLAN:         Yes, Sir.

STRIDE:         Okkerby, what's happened?  What was all that?

DOCTOR:         A time disturbance.  For a moment, we saw things as they
                should have been.
   
STRIDE:         I didn't ask you.  One more word, and you're dead.
                Okkerby?

OKKERBY:        I don't know.  For all I know, he could be right.

STRIDE:         Well, it's all over now, whatever it was.

OKKERBY:        Brilliant observation.

GREG:           [WHISPERING] What do we do?

NADIA:          We've got to get away.

GREG:           And leave the Doctor?

NADIA:          Shhh!

STRIDE:         There's *more* of them.  Come out.  Harlan?  Open

SFX:            A STREAM OF LASER PULSES

NADIA:          Quick!  Run for it, Greg!

SFX:            ANOTHER STREAM OF LASER PULSES

HARLAN:         They're getting away, Sir.

STRIDE:         Then shoot to kill!

OKKERBY:        No!  You can't just gun them down!

STRIDE:         Do not countermand my *orders*, Okkerby!

HARLAN:         They've gone.

STRIDE:         Thanks to you, Okkerby.

OKKERBY:        They can't hurt us!

STRIDE:         Don't you see that they did all this?  They're the
                saboteurs!

OKKERBY:        You don't *know* that!

DOCTOR:         She's right.  This is nothing to do with me.  And my two
                friends are quite harmless.  If you hadn't started
                firing at them, we would have all been sitting down to a
                nice pot of tea by now.

STRIDE:         Well, I ought to.  [THINKING IT OVER] No.  Right now

GREG:           It's all right.  I think they've stopped firing.

NADIA:          Good.  Do you think they've killed the Doctor?

GREG:           So, you *do* accept that he's the Doctor, then?

NADIA:          Well yeah... Oh, I don't know.  Look.  There's no time
                for that.  What are we going to do?  We can't just keep

DOCTOR:         Look.  I'm trying to be as helpful as possible, but the
                fact is that I'm suffering from a rather rushed
                metabolic change.

STRIDE:         Oh, really.  Look.  You're either hiding something, or
                you're very stupid.

DOCTOR:         Well, there's nothing up my sleeve.

STRIDE:         Oh, I'm not going to waste my time talking to you.

DOCTOR:         Good.

STRIDE:         We'll see if your friends can tell us anything. Okkerby!

OKKERBY:        Yes? What?

STRIDE:         Sir.

OKKERBY:        *Yes*?  *What*, *Sir*?

STRIDE:         Keep an eye on this one.  Harlan and I will bring the

OKKERBY:        Researching into time, of course.

DOCTOR:         Of course!

SCENE 29:       TEMPEROS - NEAR THE RUINS

STRIDE:         Any sign of them, Mister Harlan?

HARLAN:         Nope.  I think we've lost them.

STRIDE:         Well, we're not giving up.  We've *got* to get to the
                bottom of this.

HARLAN:         Do you know what?

STRIDE:         What, Mister Harlan?

HARLAN:         I reckon I know what all this is about.

STRIDE:         Oh, yes?

HARLAN:         Yes.  My grandfather told me all about it:  time
                reversing and all that.
 
STRIDE:         Did he?  And what did he say?

HARLAN:         Well, you see, he used to be a pilot on the old Delta
                run.

STRIDE:         Really?

HARLAN:         Yes.  He used to come right through this system.  Hum.
                The things he used to tell me.

STRIDE:         About what?

HARLAN:         The Temperon, of course!  A huge great beast, he said.
                Used to appear out of nowhere.  All the chronometers
                used to go haywire.  Men reckoned they saw their lives
                pass before them.  Some even aged to death.
 
STRIDE:         Rubbish, Mister Harlan.  Absolute rubbish.  Come on.

SCENE 30:       EXCELSIS - BRIDGE

SFX:            OKKERBY RUMMAGING THROUGH THE CHRONOMETERS

OKKERBY:        You see, Doctor?  Here are all the chronometers.

DOCTOR:         Stopped dead.  I see.

OKKERBY:        Well, what does it mean?

DOCTOR:         Well, at a guess, I'd say that it meant an awful lot of
                time came rushing by, and that these clocks weren't
                equipped to monitor it.
 
OKKERBY:        I always said they needed servicing.

DOCTOR:         I don't think any service would put any timepiece in
                good stead to face up to the passing of several millennia
                in a few minutes.
 
OKKERBY:        Is that what happened?!

DOCTOR:         That's what happened to my ship, the TARDIS.

OKKERBY:        That blue thing?

DOCTOR:         Yes.

OKKERBY:        Where did it go?

DOCTOR:         I don't know.  But it was taken.

OKKERBY:        Well, who took it, then?

DOCTOR:         I don't know that, either.  A lot of unanswered
                questions, aren't there?
 
OKKERBY:        Yes.  Let's go outside and wait for the intrepid Stride.

DOCTOR:         [FADING] I do hope he calms down.

SCENE 31:       TEMPEROS - NEAR THE RUINS

NADIA:          I think we'll be safe here.  

GREG:           I hope so.

NADIA:          It's getting darker.

GREG:           If that's possible.

NADIA:          Yes.  Not a very bright sort of place, is it?

GREG:           I wonder why it's so dark?

NADIA:          That's what I keep thinking.  I mean, this looks like a
                dead world.  The sun is far too old to support life.

GREG:           Well, I don't see any life on it.

NADIA:          What about us?  We're alive.

GREG:           Only just.

NADIA:          But, don't you see?  If this planet is as old as it
                looks, the atmosphere would have dissipated long ago.
                We shouldn't be able to survive out here.
  
GREG:           What are you trying to say.

SFX:            SEVERAL LASER BLASTS

NADIA:          Run for it, Greg!

SCENE 32:       TEMPEROS - NEAR THE RUINS

OKKERBY:        Sounds as if Stride has found your friends.

DOCTOR:         Oh no.  I hope he isn't as violent as he looks.

OKKERBY:        I don't think he'll kill them.

DOCTOR:         I wish I shared your confidence.

OKKERBY:        Doctor, you still haven't told me what's happening
                here.

DOCTOR:         Well, how should I put it?  It seems to me that we're
                proceeding towards the theoretical end of time.

OKKERBY:        What?

DOCTOR:         It is, of course, just a theory.  Not one I'd like to
                put to the test though.
 
SFX:            A TEMPERON MATERIALIZES AND STABILIZES [CONTINUING
                UNDER]

OKKERBY:        What's that?

DOCTOR:         I think for the first time, I'm about to find out.

OKKERBY:        Look at that!  It's... It's like a huge brain!  What is
                it?

DOCTOR:         It's the Temperon.

TEMPERON:       Temperon.  Doctor.  Friend.

OKKERBY:        It knows you!

DOCTOR:         Yes.  Yes.  I believe it does.  Uh... Temperon?  I am
                the Doctor.

TEMPERON:       Doctor.  Friend.

DOCTOR:         Yes... uh... why are you here?

TEMPERON:       Danger.  You Must Help.

DOCTOR:         How?  What sort of danger?

TEMPERON:       Pain.  Pain that cannot resist.

DOCTOR:         What?  What can't you resist?

TEMPERON:       Their power.  Power of pain.  Hurry.
                Hurry.

DOCTOR:         You must tell me more.  I don't understand!

TEMPERON:       Help. Help.  Doctor.

SFX:            A LASER BLAST HITS THE TEMPERON

TEMPERON:       [SCREAMS IN PAIN]

DOCTOR:         Stride!  Don't fire!

STRIDE:         What is that monster?

GREG:           Nadia! It's that time traveller thing!

STRIDE:         Shut up, you two! Harlan?  Open fire!

DOCTOR:         No!

SFX:            HARLAN FIRES HIS LASER

TEMPERON:       NO!

HARLAN:         [RETCHES]

SFX:            TEMPERON MATERIALIZATION [OUT]

STRIDE:         It's gone.  Must've hit it!

DOCTOR:         You fool.  You idiot.  Do you realize what you've done?

STRIDE:         Harlan.  Cover those tw....

HARLAN:         [BREATHES IN A RASPY, AGED BREATH]

STRIDE:         Harlan?

OKKERBY:        Harlan?

GREG:           He's aged!

STRIDE:         That *thing* did it to him!

DOCTOR:         Only in self-defence, you *blundering* idiot!

STRIDE:         I warn you, Doctor.

OKKERBY:        He... he's dead!

GREG:           What was that thing, Doctor?

DOCTOR:         That, Greg, was the Temperon.

STRIDE:         Oh, nonsense!

DOCTOR:         Face it, Stride, you're a little out of your
                intellectual depth!  This is a serious problem that
                can't be solved by guns and shouting. So, why don't you
                just listen?

STRIDE:         You...

OKKERBY:        He's right, Sir.  Go on, Doctor.

DOCTOR:         The Temperon *isn't* our enemy.  But something terrible
                is happening here.  Something so devastating that the
                Temperon; a solitary, calm creature, by nature; has
                taken to dragging travellers across time to help it.
    
GREG:           Help it to do what?

DOCTOR:         Defeat some terrible force that is threatening time
                itself.

GREG:           You mean, someone's using the Temperon?

DOCTOR:         Yes.

STRIDE:         But who?

DOCTOR:         I don't have all the answers, Mister Stride.  But
                welcome back to the human race.  At least you're asking
                intelligent questions.
 
SFX:            TIME DISTORTION EFFECT

STRIDE:         More time distortion. [DOUBLE TRACKED] Put that gun
                down, Stride.  It's time for you to apologize to the
                Temperon.
    
DALEKS:         Do not move!  Do not move!  Do not move!  Do not move!

DOCTOR:         Daleks!  I might have guessed.

GREG:           You might have....

DOCTOR:         But I didn't.

DALEK:          Which of you is the Doctor?  Which of you is the arch
                enemy of the Daleks?

MUSIC:          A STING

MUSIC:          BRIEF REPRISE OF THE THREATENING MARCH HEARD NEAR THE
                BEGINNING [UP AND OUT]
