MUSIC: [GENTLE AND SPACE LIKE]

SFX: [NICK'S VOICE HAS AN EERIE ATTACK AND ECHO]

NICK BRIGGS: What you are about to hear is the first audio adventure
in time and space. It was recorded in the summer of
Nineteen Eighty Four by a group of Doctor Who fans, indeed
its cast contains some of the leading lights of British
Doctor Who fandom. DWAS founder member Stephen Payne now
editor of Starburst magazine, plays the part of the Doctor.
And Doctor Who Monthly writers, Gary Russell and Richard
Marson also feature, along with DWAS executive members
Robbie Moubert and Dominic May. The whole venture
'The Space Wail' was embarked upon as both fun and
an experiment. An experiment to see what people thought
of Doctor Who audio drama. The response was surprisingly
enthusiastic and led to a whole series of plays.

[SOMEONE HUMMING A TUNE IN BACKGROUND]

DOCTOR: The Walrus and the Carpenter, ooophe, ahhh
were walking close at hand, they wept like anything to
                see, such quantities of sand.

                [PLANET OF LIES SNIPPET?]

DALEK: REPORT FOR THE DALEK SUPREME.

DALEK2: ESCORT ME, I WILL SUPERVISE THE PROCEDURE.

[WHIRLING LASER SOUND ENSUES, FOLLOWED BY EXPLOSIONS]

DOCTOR: Omp, omp. What is the matter with me. I can't help
Ria, I can't stop the Daleks. I've never felt so
                in...inadequate. Never.

SFX: [BLEEP, BLEEP]

SFX: [DOCTOR PUNCHES SOME BUTTONS ON A KEYBOARD]

DOCTOR: I can't even make contact with the timelords, what's
                happened to them?

NICK BRIGGS: In late Nineteen Eighty Six, a number of master tapes
were stolen from audio visuals. Most of them were
remixed, but the two early plays; 'The Space Wail'
and 'Connection 13' were not, because of technical
difficulties. As a result of this, and because of our
feelings about the primitive production values of the
two plays; 'The Space Wail' and 'Connection 13' were
withdrawn from sale. However, due to popular demand,
we have re-released the plays. What you will hear
is a copy of a second-generation master recording.
In all honesty the sound quality isn't very good,
nether-the-less we hope you will enjoy the somewhat
imperfect results of our earliest efforts.
